DNS Corruption?

Does anybody have any thoughts on how I can fix DNS. It is returning incorrect mx and ns records (although A and CNAME entries return as expected).

It is currently hosted with 123-reg.co.uk (as is another domain I own on a different account, which is working as expected). Would removing and re-adding all entries work perhaps?

 

As an aside, can anybody recommend a good/cheap UK DNS host that supports full DNS management, I don't need this to happen again.

Hi Matt,

 

First thing I'd do is check WHOIS is reporting correctly that 123reg is handling your domain just to cover that off.

 

Then I'd be checking what is wrong about them, are they old, completely wrong, or whatnot?

 

123reg recently for a friend took a number of hours (as per normal DNS propagation) before much was looking good.

 

Drop me a PM with the domain if you want me to check it out from a bunch of different ISPs to see if it's that that's up.

I started at the top, queried root servers to ensure that the correct name servers were returning. Then performed all my queries directly to these registered name servers.

 

I have however since discovered that the cause of the problem were 3 spurious entries (in particular an @ record pointing to a CNAME). How these got there is a mystery as I have not changed anything in months.

 

Tha reinforces the need for an answer to my next question. Any recommended dns hosts?

Ah nice one Glad you squared that away.

 

I'd recommend CSNewMedia in a heartbeat but I'm not sure whether they offer purely Domain Hosting only packages.

 

I have all of my domains over at namecheap and the ones I host the DNS for on there seem fine with no problems.

CS New Media can do DNS Hosting for you, I think it was £10 for the year but could be wrong, they do my DNS Hosting for my .county.sch.uk domain and do a grand job of it

I personally would not recommend using 123reg's DNS as the control panels are buggy. We have some domains registered with them but host DNS on our own servers.

I am with Domainmonster.... I just have not had any problems, registered my domain setup DNS and viola - spot on!
