Staff Access to Student Data

Just trying to find out what peoples opinion is to staff having access to student home directories.

 

I have heard reasons behind not giving access to the students files as data protection act but cant find anything supporting a for or against arguement.

I guess the main question is what staff?

 

Teachers? No no no. Head Teacher? Well if "needed" for incidents etc. IT Techs? Depends on school it seems.

 

Worked in two schools, One allowed IT techs to access the areas, and teachers never to unless SLT permission.

My current one, IT techs don't have any access to it, nor do teachers. Everything goes through SLT/NM.

 

End of day I see no reason why teachers need to look through student files. If it's to find work etc, it's students issues for not handing it in etc. If it's personal stuff/games etc, that's not their job to go through it.

In both schools i've worked the staff don't have access to pupils personal files saved on the network - generally they asked us if there was anything they needed to look at but there wasn't really must call for this.

However both schools had / have a student share area on the network where the pupils can upload their work to checked over by teachers.

 

I think the latter option is the best.

I've also worked in two schools, my previous school allowed all teaching staff to have access to student directories to be able to mark work electronically (paper saving exercise) and when required to be able to print off students work to be put up for display or to hand in as homework.

My current one, IT techs have access but thats where it stops.

 

But have had a member of staff (IT Teacher) ask for it and just wondered really what other peoples practises were.

I give the two ICT teachers access to the whole year groups folder .

 

a.) because i trust them not to bork anything up .

b.) if they do bork it up i have months worth of shadow copys

 

lets them mark work a lot quicker !

That's generally what VLEs/shared areas/emails are for "imo". Uploading work, and giving teachers access. In terms of printing off the work etc, again can't the students give it to them? They shouldn't really just be snooping around and printing off peoples work "imo"

We don't do it here, and I've only been asked a handful of times to retrieve coursework for absent students etc, or CVs for some of our year 11s. Given we have shared department areas where students can save work for staff to pick up, there's really been no need for this.

Our access permissions are setup as Read Only for staff but it is only upon request. We have students who for some reason do not hand in work etc and staff need to access their H drives.

 

ICT staff pretty much use it mainly (again read only access).

FYI:- Staff shared (staff only) 'Public' (staff full /students read only) 'Open' (staff full & students full to their year group folder only)

 

'Open' gets deleted every night - if a staff member does not take the work off before 8:30pm and needs it back, it costs them a bottle of wine.......
