Administrators GG denied access to Server Share

It's my fault... I was tired and being hassled by others. I don't need a lecture on what or how I should have been doing this, I need to help in putting it right. (Sorry, I'm defensive this has been THE week from hell)

 

I was setting up a login for the inspectors and checking permissions on shares to make sure they didn't have access.

 

We have a Media$ share which is where we store photos and music somehow I managed to click in the deny column on the share rather than a subfolder and click OK more than once and then realised that I had done this for "Administrators" security group. Unfortunately it worked.

 

I seem to have regained ownership of the share for Administrator, but this is not cascading down... before I stuff this up any further what should I be doing please?

 

I have absolutely no intention of trying to sort this out until I've had a huge amount of sleep, but thought I'd better get asking now.

When you say cascading down I think you need to look at the NTFS permissions and take ownership of them (the root folder) and all subfolders.

I've taken ownership of the root, but will I have to take ownership of all the subfolders separately?

No there is a tick box at the bottom when you do that mentioning subfolders etc.

Properties/Security tab/Advanced button/Owner tab/Edit button - select Administrators - Replace owner on subcontainers and objects tick box - wait as it'll take a while depending on size.

 

Don't stress, I'm sure many here have done it, I certainly have on the main student file shares when migrating them. Easily fixed though. You can also use the Windows chown utility to do this via the command line - this is awesome and I use it yearly to set ownership of student folders for FSRM.

Thanks guys. In my state of mental exhaustion yesterday, I completely missed the flipping obvious. I'm well used to ticking that box.
