Uplift Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 After a recent theft of a brand new ipod classic we really want to get up to date on security tagging our equipment. We want something that we can put on all hardware with a unique number and also our school name. and if possible it needs to be really hard to remove... i know it's almost impossible to get something that cant be removed at all because they can just sand it off... but anything that makes life difficult or then damages the hardware making it hard to sell on would be ideal. Any suggestions?

HarryMonkey Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Smartwater is ok but it's not really a deterent. It's fine for identifying your stuff in the (unlikely) event it gets recovered. For me, engraving is the route, and non too pretty either.

Mako Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 (edited) We have an iron that is engraved with the site name and postcode that used to be used to burn in to equipment (hasn't been done that way for years now, a very permanent solution). Instead we use a combination of SmartWater and security stickers, that are backed with a high grade adhesive that takes quite a bit of determination to remove and are usually created from a metal material, generally aluminium, so it can't be torn off. Stickers come with the site name and a 5 digit number on each sticker. Bundles vary on size and type depending on how much you buy and from where. Can't remember the company name myself, but essentially they're all the same. The unique number is then put into our asset database along with the model and serial number of the object. It's then smartwatered in a discreet location. The stickers are usually placed out of sight to prevent temptation from kids to pick at them.
