  1. It actually started working the next day, must have just been some sort of delay?
  2. It's exactly the same using the FQDN sorry should have said.
  3. I have setup an external two-way trust between 2 domains. I need users from domain1.local to be able to access some resources from domain2.local and vice versa. I have setup DNS and can ping both servers from both locations, all looks ok here. The problem is when accessing shares that aren't on the DC, it gives a permission error: \\10.83.123.6 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. From the external trust: \\server1 (DC - 10.83.123.4) => this works, it pops up asking for network credentials. \\server2 (10.83.123.6) => brings the error Any ideas? can't see what is wrong.
  4. What school tier is that for? We would be classed as a large school so looking at £750 for one year.. a significant discount over several years makes it much more attractive.
  5. Yeah this puts me off, it's just another thing added to the ever-growing list of stuff that is subscription based. Paying a fortune for something we never actually own annoys me, everything will be paid this way soon.
  6. I would love to see the list, thanks. I am the 'IT Guy' and therefore not really curriculum based, but i'm the one they badger when software isn't working properly... a lot of it is down to bugs in the old 2Simple collection and can't be fixed so I have decided enough is enough, i would love to replace it.
  7. Hi guys, I am wondering what education curriculum based software suite schools are using these days? We have been using the 2Simple collection for a long time now,it's rather dated but works well for our younger children. However it is littered with bugs and not very good for older KS2 children. I like 2Simple because it covers core subjects so may look at Purple Mash which has thousands of activities... Is there anything similar that schools can buy in that covers the whole spectrum and is easy to use and suitable for all ages of primary school... We don't really have a strong software strategy or budget planning, we have basically just lived off what 2Simple has given us.. I want to focus on improving the software in school, but must admit: I don't know where to start. What are the 2Simple alternatives? or is Purple Mash the best shout? Basically just need some core software that can cover most lessons. Many thanks
  8. Wasn't really sure where to post this, apologies if there is a better suited forum. This question is for ICT co-ordinators or anyone who uses iPads in education. We're basically trying to acquire a list of apps that are non-educational that we can put a spin on and use in an educational setting. We feel some of our children would learn more using apps they actually enjoy, i guess to educate the child without them knowing.. For example, every child's favourite: Angry Birds.. this could be used in maths, take a screenshot to try and work out the flight path that might be needed to hit the target, or do something like averages with scores. English: write a story about why the birds are attacking. Why are they determined to destroy everything? That is completely vague and the example can be used across various apps but i'm wondering if anyone else is doing something similar? How are you using apps and games that may not be educational in a way that can be used as a lesson etc.. Any ideas welcome! thanks
  9. What is the best way to manage multiple iPads? ideally i would like to create a 'master' configure settings and apps, then same this full image and distribute that, however i don't think this is possible? in my experience syncing ipads purchases must be transferred to a computer and then backup, then sync apps.. it's a long winded way of doing it i think. Is there a way to create a FULL backup inc apps etc? and then push that? i have used apple configurator in the past and it worked great for initial setup but it didn't solve the problem with apps if i remember rightly. any suggestions appreciated
  10. Thanks for the help guys i'll check it out. The dd-wrt routers look interesting.
  11. I dont think it's possible with Virgin Media Superhub.
  12. I have OpenVPN built into the NAS but it's restricted to certain ports as main ports are used for other services 80 http, 443 https etc... and then obviously i can't connect on the other ports because they are blocked. So is my only option here corkscrew?
  13. Is it possible to access SSH/FTP through port tunnelling or proxy or something? I'm not exactly sure what i'm asking for but the problem i'm facing is: i want to access my home NAS (linux) box from work. However my works proxy is pretty much locked down i can't ftp, ssh, ftps.. everything is pretty much blocked. I can WebDAV into the box, as expected as this is port 80.. so is there any way i can access ssh/ftp over port 80? Obviously i can't listen on port 80 since it's already in use but i can change the ports to anything else not in use. WebDAV would be suitable but since it treats all files like http requests it's hard to do web development from the box, if there is an error in the PHP file. then opening the file will just display the error, rather than the code. It's the same with .htaccess files and such, they are blocked from direct http access. I'm not sure if either solution would be possible: - Make WebDAV work like FTP... may be some apache configs or something? - Port tunnelling or some sort of service to allow access to FTP/SSH over a proxy?
  14. How do you automatically enforce Safety Mode for all computers?
  15. Youtube is an amazing resource so it's a shame to have it blocked. We have trailed allowing it for whole school and generally it works well, but with certain children all it takes is 1 inappropriate video to open up a world of clips they shouldn't be watching, in particular children with behaviour issues who get excited over violence, accidents, blood, and all the rest of it, which is easily accessible on youtube. Is there a way we can filter content, a child/school friendly version? how effective is it? Do you enable youtube or is it blocked completely?
  16. I have confirmed that IMAP is enabled on the services, tried to telnet imap.fronter.com 993 imap.fronter.com 143 imap.gmail.com 993 imap.gmail.com 143 all failed
  17. Basically trying to setup Outlook on client PCs to connect to a few services; Fronter Mail (VLE) Live@Edu Gmail Outlook Live (Exchange online i think it is?)
  18. One problem i've always had was connecting to IMAP so i could use an email client within our school network. I always assumed ports are blocked and i don't have full access to the cachepilot to check.. having a bit of free time i contacted the LA to look into it. I have received a reply: Does this sound about right? if so does anyone know how to do it?
  19. Is there any way to route the start menu to a custom folder containing shortcuts that we place in them. We used a program called Talmos Classroom Manager a couple of year ago on XP and it worked really well.. we have since upgraded to windows 7 x64 and i tried to adopt the same method but it doesn't work really well at all. The old way we had a hidden share \\server\menus$\roomname and then set that location to the start menu location from registry using a vbs script at logon.. doing the same thing with Windows 7 shows the icons but when they are clicked nothing happens.
  20. great suggestions, we'll go with the asset tags and smart water
  21. After a recent theft of a brand new ipod classic we really want to get up to date on security tagging our equipment. We want something that we can put on all hardware with a unique number and also our school name. and if possible it needs to be really hard to remove... i know it's almost impossible to get something that cant be removed at all because they can just sand it off... but anything that makes life difficult or then damages the hardware making it hard to sell on would be ideal. Any suggestions?
  22. aw, we're on 7 x64, thats for the suggestions.
  23. Is it possible to logon all computers with iTALC? I know i can log them off but cant find a logon setting, maybe there is a command i can use? When performing administrative tasks where i need to be on the computer it's a nightmare running round and logging them all on manually. Is there any way to over come this? Also is there a command i can use to uninstall apps? It would be awesome if i could remote control all computers at once.
  24. thanks for the suggestions received a few PMs i'll be going over later. I'm shocked that some of you have been getting free delivery from Misco.
  25. Misco is who we are with now, been with them for years and very happy but last few orders have been way too long i can't risk ordering anything else incase it takes the same amount of time. I ordered a monitor and tower thursday 22nd september, it was listed in stock and was told it would be here next day . it's now 3rd october and it's not arrived and not had a single email. The last order was exactly the same, i only ordered a bluetooth headset and 5 cat5 cables.. nothing turned up and i was forced to send an email asking what was up, i was told the items were on back order and would be sent out asap.. i waited and waited.. sent another email saying cancel order as i would buy locally as couldn't wait any longer, at this point i was told the headset was EOL would i like something else, i picked something else and it turned up a few days later... then the cables a few days after that. it's a complete nightmare when it's something you really need. Also misco delivery charges are quite high, i regularly have the business manager coming to me and saying is this right as sometimes it costs more than the item itself.
