AngryTechnician Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 (edited) Supposedly available next week, looks very nice. Hopefully they will have some to play with on the Dell stand at BETT, though I think we'd all be more interested to see the Windows 8 Developer Preview on it than just Windows 7. Particularly noteworthy is the dock and what looks like a DisplayPort video out (possibly HDMI, video doesn't give a 100% clear view). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kpHL5O1JcY Edited October 27, 2011 by AngryTechnician
featured_spectre Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 If they get w7 working properly then I don't see the issue personally!
AngryTechnician Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 True enough, but given that the Windows 8 interface is much more geared for tablets than Windows 7, I think that's when Windows tablets will really start to shine.
featured_spectre Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Yeah but why put the dev preview on, when MS have said thats only 1 aspect of W8. Would need an alpha to see the full preview of W8.
Dos_Box Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Because W7 on tablets simply does not work correctly. The on screen KB, navigation etc were all designed to be used with as mouse and often require pixel perfect precision to operate controls which is exactly what touch interfaces do not need. The way they work out where it is you want to be 'clicking' is different to ensure accuracy. W8 does this very well indeed, even on the 'classic' desktop.
featured_spectre Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Oh I agree, but there has been people developing accurate touch drivers, which equates to a click of a mouse (provided you use a touch pen). I know its a PITA, and I have a tablet with W7 and Droid running on it (dual boot), and the touch is a pita on both as I customised the drivers myself (droid had no drivers for this device). W8 Dev Preview is exactly that, just a dev preview...the Alpha would need to be released for people to see how great it actually is...That or they go over to android.
SYNACK Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 It looks great but the big question and the one that will probably make it fall down (given the intel logo) is how 'long' will the battery last. If they can fix that it should be epic.
jamesfed Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I do see tablets like this as the future - high speed (AMD Fusion processor (like the E-350 which is more than enough for my needs)/SSD) with a easy to use docking station. Problem is Windows 7 isn't ready for that but I have high hopes for Windows 8
Guest Guest Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 That looks cool, We're going tablet shopping at BETT so it's on the shopping list!
localzuk Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 One thing to notice there is it seems that everyone spends most of their time walking about...
featured_spectre Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 At the geek stand we had sofas last year so we did not wonder off too much. I checked a few bits out here and there for my work, but if I am not employed at the time BETT is on, then (if invited) I will be on the stand all day I loved my time last year and my mask provided some amusement for @Dos_Box. Back on the subject of tablets - there was a nice variety on the geek stand, and I wonder if some companies would be willing to loan some trial units for BETT
AngryTechnician Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 Let me clarify: I'm not saying they should bung Windows 8 Dev Preview on and ship it. That would be insane. I'm saying when they bring them to BETT I'd like to have a play with one that has Windows 8 on it. Also, the Dell product page that was returning 404 earlier has now been put up, including full specs: Latitude ST Tablet
featured_spectre Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 It may be possible to speak with the Dell Marketing people and ask them to do it for the Bett show...show one with W7 and one with W8 and show the difference
