If I encounter low headphone volume, I usually suspect my headphones. Sometimes they are broken, sometimes a pair of headphones used elsewhere has a high impedance and doesn't work on some devices. I would try some other headphones and confirm the problem is with the source before doing anything else.

Loud enough for me, but not what others would call 'loud', probably to do with the stupid EU elf n safety regs on personal stereo volume.

I'm talking it being too quiet to hear a downloaded video without straining (that on my HTC Desire that I'd previously turn the volume down on)

AudioBoost may be the answer. You will need to root your SGS2 for this app to work. See this XDA thread for more info.

I don't. Have you thought about returning it to where you bought it from? I assume you've already tried changing the volume through the service mode menu?

 

This I can confirm is an issue with some of the very first examples. I called Samsung, they replaced the handset (annoying to set it all up again) and I have had no further problems. They acknowledged on the phone it was a known issue, but as far as I can tell are doing little to inform people.

 

So the handset is faulty and Samsung know about it. Take it back.

I haven't played with anything (as I assume all the "solutions" do what people say)

 

But, all have their drawbacks.

 

Only 1 actual S2 owner (teejay) has answered and they say its loud enough for them.

 

I'm going to see if I can use audacity to do a comparative test between devices.

Just did a quick comapre with my wife's HTC legend (both playing same video using same software)

Searches seem to indicate its just a quiet phone. By default it looks like the volume slider does not actually allow 100% volume and the service menu hack will enable it but will distort the audio.

 

Short of any more information from other owners you may be waiting for a firmware hack/upgrade or taking it back.

Just did think of another option, noise canceling headphones. They are great and let you hear what you are playing even in noisier environments. They also usually include their own little amp which may help also.
