Well, I ordered a Microserver last night. I didn't get the memory & disk bundle, just the basic model.

I'll use the supplied 250G disk for the OS - probably Ubuntu with a media front-end, and get an additional two 1 or 2TB disks, mirrored if the BIOS will support it, or a scheduled rsync.

Any recommendations for disks?

Also thinking of getting a bluetooth mini-keyboard with pad - this should round it off nicely with the HDMI card Authur found.

well mine microserver arrived wed, i have, for the time being, just installed 2008r2, will be installing home server but i didnt order more ram and didnt read the min specs (2gb for home server, 512 for 2008r2 )

I have chucked in a 1tb, 2tb, 500gb drives in so far. was watching a bit of sg1 streaming from it to my tv last night (had to turn off when the missus got home )

but on the whole im very pleased with it and when i have my office finished it will be great. getting my ipad soon so will be remote desktoping to it to manage (hopefully easier than iphone)

thanks again folks

I would recommend sticking around 8Gb in, what with it being so cheap, you will soon use it up ;)

Ive found using RDP on my ipad complicated, let me know what rdp app you use as I would love to find a good one.

Right, server ordered, I know which disks to get. I'll try the 1G memory, if that's not enough I'll get a 4GB stick.

And for the icing on the cake, I saw this

It says it's Linux compatible, so it looks ideal.

And for the front-end, Boxee looks the business.

I wasn't expecting much when I bought it, but I have to say I really like it after using it. I normally use a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard on my desktop PC at home, so the layout of the keys on the K400 took a bit of getting used to, particularly in the bottom right where the arrow keys are. This applies to almost all small keyboards however. The touchpad is great (very responsive) and I haven't noticed any lag when moving the cursor or typing. After a few minutes of inactivity the keyboard goes to sleep, but there is barely any delay when you start using it again.

I like the fact that you can use two fingers to scroll up and down webpages (as you would on a Mac) and the left-click/right-click buttons below the touchpad are nice and big. I haven't needed to use a mouse so far either. In terms of size/weight, the keyboard fits nicely on my lap when sitting down and is light enough to forget it's there, but not too light it slides about, if you know what I mean. My only criticism is that it isn't backlit, but you can't have it all, especially for the £24.49 I paid. :)

Here are a few screenshots from the SetPoint software showing the settings you can change...

I've currently got a similar issue - currently using my Dell Optiplex SFF 1.86Ghz Core Duo 2 with 2GB of RAM with Win 2003. Machine is fairly quiet apart from the 500gb HDD. I need to think about getting more disk space and more RAM - but as its SFF I have limited options.

I'm thinking, I will virtual the server... but thinking either to buy QNAP NAS? or HP Microserver or to upgrade my current optiplex with more RAM and new HDD...

Any ideas?

Both the NAS and Microserver are fantastic bits of kit. It kind of depends on what you need to do. if you want a box you can turn on and just use without having to run all the MS updates and constant messing with settings go with the NAS. If you need to use or learn an OS go with the HP Microserver.

You can always use freenas on the microserver

This looks nice - it also does what I want it to do. One quick question - if I purchased one of these and used the iTunes Server to store my music (a lot of it) will it still let me drag and drop onto my iphone? (that is a relly dumb question I know).

The itunes server is one of the few utils I have never used on the qnap nas as I have never really liked apple products. You could post the question on the qnap forums.

If it uses the DAAP protocol (like most other NAS drives), then probably not.

If you want to try it, set up a ubuntu virtual machine (a live session should do) then install either mt-daapd/firefly media server or forked-daapd (most nas systems I've seen use mt-daapd/firefly)

Well, my Microserver arrived (thanks @ServersPlus) but still wondering about the HDMI card.

I want it to directly connect it to a quality amp for my MP3 collection. I have a Terratec Phase 22 pro soundcard knocking about, but I have a feeling it won't fit in the half-height slot.

What's the best way of getting HDMI out to a TV and sound out to a separates amp? I suspect it will be a HDMI card plus a separate sound card, unless anyone knows better?

SLight fly in the ointment, it must work with Ubuntu 11.10. ATI have a better track record with open source....

Couldnt you just use the hdmi to hifi and vga/dvi to screen or even hdmi to amp, amp to hdmi screen or even amp via hdmi to dvi lead to screen

Sorry to drag this up again... I think I've decided on the Microserver business...

But HP ProLiant Turion II N40L MicroServer - £100.. | Ebuyer.com ebuyer have changed the processor? Which ones better?

Also, this is trivial but my current Dell has an Intel core duo 2 1.86 - is the microserver AMD going to be worse performance?

Yes it will be worse performance, BUT lower power and therefore cheaper. Is the server currently maxing out the CPU?

The processor used in the previous 1.3GHz MicroServer isn't that much slower than a Core 2 Duo E6300, so I would expect the 1.5GHz N40L to be more or less on par with it based on the benchmarks below...
