Trouble shot default gpo printer windows 7

Please could someone help me. We have just upgraded a room to windows 7 and moved the setting of the printers from a script as I cannot get the script to run correctly on windows 7.

 

We have 2 printers that have seperate group policies and the hp2200dn is set as the default in group policy.

 

We have tried setting the hp2200dn to run in loopback and we have tried removing the loopback and running the policy as the local user.

 

For some reason both printers appear but for some reason when some users log on they dont get the hp2200dn as the default. Its not consistent on a computer or user or group of users. Sometimes only one in the class will not pick up the default and other classes dont get the default on half a dozen.

 

I have checked the log on servers and it appears random.

 

I have checked the domain controllers are replicating.

 

I have checked the eventlog and cannot see a reason why this is happening.

 

I have modeled the group policy and this appear ok.

 

All the computers are exactly the same spec and built from the same image.

 

Has anyone got any ideas what I can do to stop this happening?

you can always use a script in all user startup to JUSt set the default printer something like

Staff and kids here have problems when they have only the printers in the room they are working in. I have asked that the teacher in the room get the kids to print by clicking file and print and choose a printer but its just not going to happen.

which is why you deploy it to only the appropriate pcs so add a script to a gpo on that domain only that at bootup copies a shortcut to that script (i usually leave the actual script in netlogon)

 

so id have a gpo called roomx default printer and have a script like

 

copy "\\server\netlogon\printers\suitedefault.lnk" "%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\printers.lnk" /y

I have jus deployed Print Management under 2008 R2 and you can target the default printer to an OU (i.e. Machine OU) thru Machine > Loopback processing and User > Preferences. So you can set a default printer this way. Think it needs a bit of fine tuning but can be done. We only seem to have an issue with laptops defaulting to a printer but the laptops are used all over site so don't really want a default printer set.

Any chance you can write more details about that settings for Default printer for OU?

 

We use script here, but it is a bit temperamental

I use Group Policy for this too,

 

what we have is each room split into an OU, and then in the GPO that applies to all the users, open up User config > Preferences > control panel > printers

 

firstly create one that drops all the printers, it only does network ones, so don't worry,

 

then create the printer, mapped, select whether it is default or not, and then in the "common" tab click "targetting" and change the filtering to apply to the OU where the computer is located.

 

do all of them this way, all the mappings in one OU, that applies to all users, but maps the drive based upon where the computer is in the AD.

 

You may need to add the drivers for some incalcitrant printers to the desktop machines, we add all the printer drivers to all the images we have, we do this the easy way, open \\printserver\ select all the printers and click enter, it will connect to the lot and load any drivers needed, as we used to have issues with students not having the rights to install drivers.
