New server needed for Oliver software?

Need some advise about new server(s).

 

New school with, hold your breath, no file server or AD, that need to get Oliver library software up and running asap.

There are plans for file server and student/staff log ins however that may be a few weeks away.

 

I can't believe that Oliver software is recommended to have a separate server so was suggesting that it live on a separate hdd of the soon to be purchased server.

Does anyone have any pointers/suggestions as to the best way forward?

 

iMacs with Lion and bootcamp Windows 7, pc's with windows 7, all physically networked and on internet.

How much money will they let you spend?

 

If you can I'd get a decent server and then visualise it, so you can add extra virtual servers later on.

 

What sort of scale system are you looking at?

I will get back to you when the figure has been discussed. Personally I think it a waste to get a server just for the Oliver software. We desperately need a file server with AD. Horse before the cart etc!

adding the file server or AD later i my view of the new version 5 is not really a problem. i will detail in photos shortly.

 

we have oliver running here, it was running a duel cpu box but it was shared with RM easytrace software and ran well.that was for the last 3 years. now we run it on a hyper v 2008 windows server VM.

 

 

as you can see i have possilble over spected the number of cpu's as i have 3 at present. with 6000mb of memory but then i have 2400 kids and 350 staff with poss connections from 1200 thin clients and 350 machines poss...

 

i have single sign on via AD network name but that is in a custom field which you can add later.

 

do you have admin numbers? for staff. e.g. andy baldock - 1001 andrew baldock - 1002 stuart baldock - 3003 (hope you get the idea?)

as this would make adding infomation like login name easier after the event.

 

also do you plan on having smart card access for students?

Does it have to be Oliver? I'd be looking at other library software if the decision isn't 100% set in stone yet.

It seems that the school has decided Oliver is the answer so I will have to run with that. They a seem to have a strange remote install/training system that I am trying to get to grips with.

A server has been 'found' that is up to spec so I will be installing MS Server 2008 and SQL next week. It's been over 10 years since I did a server install so are there any pointers that I need to be aware of with a fresh install?

 

We have around 500 students with the numbers expected to double next year and 100 staff

2008 server is very easy to complete, i did it on a m$ hypervisor setup.which is not that much different to bare metal install.

 

oliver team will guide you though the install, they just need to get their screen view software thought any firewall you have and your should be ok.

 

their support is very good and they know what they are doing. we had a complex install here with imports from 2 sources 1 manual 1 auto. plus emails and other bits linked in and vle... all problems have been resolved quickly. just give them a call.

 

that be said i was talking to the UK office you might have az or one of the other offices..

We have it hosted from Australia. Seems to work fine.

Our oliver server (VM) has 5gb ram. Mostly for crappy java. Any less and it cries. Our is all on one server, not prepared to make another VM for their middleware.

 

Unimpressed with support and sales. I'll leave it at that.

 

The library team want to change, their experience has been poor.
