Hard Drive Transfer

Hi,

 

Im helping a member of staff out, and was just looking for some quick advice.

 

They have an old machine, and want to simply take the hard drive out, and place in new machine.

 

Perfectly fine, but im just wondering when the new hard drive is in, what about drives etc.

 

Which is why they need my help,

 

Whats the best way of doing this?

Is the point that they don't want to reinstall their programs, or is there another goal?

Assuming the other machine works, they'd be better off just using the drive from the old machine as a data drive. Let the drivers etc work as installed on it's original drive

i would of done this but the other machine has no hard drive at all, im thinking of cloning the exsisting drive but i still wondered about drivers even after the clone image is restored on the hard drive in the new machine, is there a way of forcing driving onto a machine or image?

Windows 7 should be fine to exchange the hard disks. We do it all the time here.

We are using windows xp, i have done this on windows 7 but i had a feeling doing the same with xp may be much more difficult

XP has a knack of bluescreening with any unsuitable chipset drivers installed. I would recommend using acronis true image universal restore function, where it will strip the drivers out of the disk image as it flies to the target drive.

I'd encourage them to get a new drive and then set everything up properly, then transfer their data over or follow elsiegee's slave drive suggestion. If they will pony up for a new drive, but are determined not to reinstall, you could try something like PCMover, but I suspect it needs an OS on the second drive. I suspect the XP T&C means they should anyway!

cheers guys, pretty much confirmed what i had thought, think we'll be going for a 2nd hard drive, reinstall programes, and move data.
