gaz350 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Yesterday we had 2 guys break into our shiny new building and steal 19 iMacs. in and out 6 mins (although they had been probing the various gates and waiting for the all clear for over 30 minutes). after discussing with 1 of our suppliers of apple kit apparently there is a Gang actively targeting schools with apple kit and travelling around the East Midlands area.
dayzd Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I've heard this too. Had a message a couple of weeks ago from a school in Lincs saying in the previous week there'd been three targeted break-ins in the county where all they took were Macs. None of the keyboards or mice, just the machines, leading to the assumption that they know what they're after and not just palming them off quickly in pub car parks...
SYNACK Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 And people were saying Mac's were more secure Sorry to hear about your loss of equipment anyhow, hopefully your insurance will be kind enough to provide you will all new shiney to take its place.
GrumbleDook Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 OOhh ... nasty. Don't forget to circulate all the serial numbers with Apple and ASEs, just in case anyone takes a machine in to be repaired. Even if it has been sold on it is your property and you can get it back, as well as getting more evidence for the police to help catch the blighters!
Gatt Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 ....for the police to help catch the blighters! The police actually do this still?

Erm Apple say they dont have a way to track and keep no stolen device registry according to a lot of posts but the UK may have something US dont: Although Apple does not have a process to track or flag lost or stolen product Reporting a lost or stolen Apple product Or is their information incorrect? Mobiles are separately handled by the mobile networks and not the hardware providers as they use a IMEI registry of banned IMEI serials. Edited October 3, 2011 by ZeroHour

I've also read the same thing, but heard different stories in the actual supply chain of recovered macs.

They have been saying that for years (not our problem, contact the police!), but been able to use Apple, ASEs and Apple repair firms to help recover a number of stolen machines and ensure one conviction.
hsimpson Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 (edited) I use a bit of free, open source software called Prey as an anti-theft solution for my Mac. Maybe it will provide you with a little extra security? Edited October 10, 2011 by hsimpson
tech_guy Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Yeah, I've bunged Prey on ours as well just in case. http://preyproject.com/

SC92 Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Just seen this and I have to also agree, it does look pretty nifty. Although tried to sign up a few hours ago and haven't received the email to "verify" yet? Tried 2 different email addresses so far
Arthur Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Vuwer is another good free app for tracking stolen Mac's, particularly if you want to cut out the middle-man. 1
