Pampered prisoners can get Sky Sports 1 in their cells

In there cells, for Christ's sake!!! Not even a communal TV room. My step kids don't even have TV in their bedrooms!

Prison should be a prison, not a holiday camp. Why do they even have TV? It's not a basic human right so it shouldn't be there.

Oh behave!

You can't go upsetting prisoners, and their lily-livered liberal friends and human rights merchants with such spoutings! Next, you'll be advocating stocks and suchlike!!

Now, back to reality! Prison is about rehabilitation. Prisoners are locked up, in some cases, for 23 hours a day. Should they have tv? Yes! But only the 5 major channels. Should they have access to PCs? Yes, but heavily filtered, and no messenger/email access.

I have a couple of friends who work in prisons, and they are deeply unimpressed with the amount of stuff that these people receive under the "Human Rights" banner.

Out of interest do you have any figures available about how many inmates reoffend? If the percentage is high then I would say that the system doesn't work as it's intended to.

EDIT: Found an article Nearly 50% of released prisoners re-offend - BBC

That's exactly the thing. You get a load of criminals in one place, let them chill out and sit about watching TV, playing on a PS3 and they will probably sit there talking about what they are in for, and all exchange war stories and pick up ideas.

It basically becomes a criminal conference

I would absolutely agree that the system doesn't work!

The only way to stop prisoners re-offending is to cut off their heads! Or , perhaps, lethal injection....Hanging, anyone????

There are always going to be those that are dedicated to a life of crime. Give them as little, inside, and possible. Make them work harder. Recruit more wardens, so prisoners CAN work, and are not trapped in their cells for 23 hours. If they don't WANT to work, let them rot in their cells with NO entertainment!

Sorry...must go for a lie down....The server room is favourite!!

Like the American system? Breaking rocks, printing license plates etc...?

Recidivism rates are extremely high in the UK and higher still in America.

I think that we should be looking at the Danish model for prisons, since their recidivism rate is amongst the lowest in the world.
