Faulty HD?

We've 6 G4 iBook's and one won't boot. It sits there with the spinning wheel so I booted from the install CD and tried the repair option and I'm getting the following:

 

The volume macintosh hd could not be repaired.

 

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.

 

1 HFS volume checked

1 volume could not be repaired because of an error

Repair attempted on 1 volume

1 volume could not be repaired

 

 

So does that mean the HD is faulty? If so what are my chances of replacing it? I take it macs are far harder to repair than notebooks .

iBooks shouldnt be much harder to repair, I would use iFixit: The free repair manual for a guide, used them to take an old powerbook G3 apart and the guides are handy. probably a 2.5" 5400rpm ide drive.

try looking at iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz Hard Drive Replacement - iFixit not sure if its your exact one but won't be too far from it.

get a copy of DiskWarrior 4 - The Disk Utility for Mac Disk Repair, Mac Directory Repair, Mac Disk Recovery, Mac Data Recovery

 

sounds like a disk directory error which can be fixed using the software above.

You could also boot in single user mode (power on and hold down cmd+s) and run fsck -fy at the prompt.
