MS EES question

Can someone give me a breakdown of how much EES costs based on 250 staff, 1800 Office + TS licenses + CALS(student's staff use at home over terminal services).

 

Just got to come up with some numbers for SLT.

Check your staff numbers, it's only counts people who use the computer as part of their job. So probably not the cleaners...

 

For the 160 staff plus 30 student issued computers... we paid about £7500 OTOH. We don't currently have any use for TS, so this may be extra, or may be included.

 

Last year for 650 computers we paid nearly £20k.

I got the staff numbers bit - I just need to know how much per member of staff and then how much 'extra' for each piece of software if there is anything extra

 

£7500/160 = £46 per user - sound about right everyone?

It depends which you go for. There are a few options. When the world starts in the morning, I'll get some pricing for you.

I think it's around £35 per staff for the standard desktop pack which gives you Office, Windows and the core CAL suite (Windows server, Exchange, Lync, SCCM, Sharepoint and Forefront). Alternatively you can just license Office for ~£17 per staff and Windows for ~£13 per staff.

 

You can add on extra licenses to your agreement also, not sure if the TS CALs fall under that category?

 

Insight and RM were very helpful at providing us info and quotes for us.

probably not, maybe, don't know. We have 300 WinXP pro licenses since around 2005. 800 x 2008 CALS and TS Cals from this year, 20 2008R2 licenses and 500X office 2003 licenses.

 

We tend to license perpetually, as this has always been the most cost effective method as we usually upgrade every 5-6 yrs. - I have a meeting next week to discuss MS licensing and need to know the options - ie how much EES will cost for the above.

And now I have found the proper quote, it was just a touch over £7k

 

I had 163 Staff Enterprise at £32 each, and 28 students at £16.

I also had a bunch of other stuff, the more I added the cheaper the per person prices went. You still have to count your Windows servers, SQL, blah, DPM servers, sharepoint, blah, as separate items.

That's right. We already had perpetual licenses for SQL and Windows Server so just carry on using those..

Does the MSOffice licensing extend to students accessing MSOffice at home, either by way of installation disk or by terminal services?

I have just got a quote today for EES, For 70 full time staff, with software assurance pack and Core Cal come in at £2,646.00

 

I did read today when looking at the EES document that was sent with the quote that Students can use the software on school computers and are not counted in the cost, you only have to add students on if your installing the software on their own personal machines.

For the Core CAL, as quoted (and purchased through) Insight, we pay £34.something per FTE staff. With 75 teachers, 36 support staff and 1 of the kitchen staff making use of the computer, we pay about £3.7k pa for EES.

 

I wrote a document up yesterday actually for our bursar, as we have the Big O in tomorrow and she wanted some proof of value-for-money. See the attached EES Proposal.docx - quick two pager that compares the cost of the Select agreement we were on (perpetual licences) against EES.

 

And FWIW, our server licences are perpetual - about £30 a time for 2k8R2 etc.

So if we wanted to provide remote desktop Office to 1800 students on their home machines, I'm guessing we'd buy 1800 Office licenses, but given staff prices are roughly double student prices we'd be looking at around £8 per Office license * 1800 = £14k per yr ? sound about right?

to be honest im not to sure how that would work because the equiptment still belongs to the school might be worth getting in contract with MS to ask them about that.

cheers, my understanding of MS terminal server licensing is that to use MSOffice, every machine that connects must have a valid Office license, thus purchasing one for every student we'd be covered. Can anyone clarify?

The 28 students are the ones that we have issued with a laptop for the duration of their studies. It belongs to us, but as I understand the rules (errr) because we want to allow them to purchase it at the end of the course without having to remove all the software. It was not a typo it really is 28 not 280, or 2800 students. They're "special", although I think one or two have left since August.. meh!

 

As I understood the TS\RDS licenses, because you're only running the software within you servers on site (even though they can access it remotely) you don't have to count the students. Check with your retailers... or ask the new Microsoft man, who's name I can't remember.

I'm fairly certain that isn't the case post office 2000, otherwise we could just sell online access and MS would loose on their cashcow.

I think that's sort of right with the new EEES due to the cals you recive if you go for the enterpirse cals you get a lot of Forefront productors one is the remote access setup so I would check with MS before you buy it.

I think this might be covered under the software assurance because they were school laptops it be worth a check as well.
