LiamH Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 BBC News - Speed-of-light experiments give baffling result at Cern Proves to be a massive change in thought for science if true. Love the way science adapts its view Will use this as an excuse to quote Science, Ajusts its views based on whats observed. Faith, is the denail of observation so that belief can be preserved
localzuk Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I have the gut feeling that this sort of news should be slightly more prominent in the MSM!!
LiamH Posted September 23, 2011 Author Posted September 23, 2011 I have the gut feeling that this sort of news should be slightly more prominent in the MSM!! Completely agree, its not even on the news home page on the bbc, even under the science section
jinnantonnixx Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 (edited) Proves to be a massive change in thought for science if true. Love the way science adapts its view Of course it does. Theories change and are modified. If disproved, they die. If hypotheses/theories stand up to observations, they are strengthened and flourish. Einstein's 'cosmic constant' is a classic example. It was held to be true for a while, but now is generally regarded to be a mistake. Science is a method, not an authority. Be cool to go faster than light, though. When you get there, you can look back and see yourself arrive. If that doesn't spin you out, nothing will. Edited September 23, 2011 by jinnantonnixx
aerospacemango Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Early scientists believed that the earth was the centre of the universe.... That belief was allowed to change! Religion has not changed in a thousand years! I know which I believe in.....
jinnantonnixx Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I know which I believe in..... Yep. It's turtles all the way down....
Greenbeast Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Yep. It's turtles all the way down.... hehe, classic
jamesb Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 A slightly better view on it, and a little anti-sensationalist rant by the journalist to boot - Faster-than-light back with surprising CERN discovery ? The Register
Andrew_C Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Einstein's 'cosmic constant' is a classic example. It was held to be true for a while, but now is generally regarded to be a mistake.Actually, the other way around. Einstein hated it, and tried hard to work it out of the equations. It is fairly well accepted now.
NikChillin Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Be cool to go faster than light, though. When you get there, you can look back and see yourself arrive. If that doesn't spin you out, nothing will. Just don't bother with the headlights!
