Anybody tried Android tablets in education?

 

I had a look at the Andypad and Andypad Pro yesterday.

 

Biggest limitation I see at the moment is Androids lack of proxy support, but I think this could be fixed with Trans Proxy and root access.

 

There are some other things we would like to do, so I thought I would brainstorm for ideas on here...

 

• Lock down settings to stop students removing apps
  
• lock out market to stop them installing apps
  
• access their user areas on the server
  
• imaging - fog/ghost < I'm thinking of using titanium backup to restore installed apps

We are using Asus EEE Pad Transformers in our sixth form. Few issues to thrash out with EMBC regarding certain things with the proxy, but in terms of use I'm pretty happy.

We have some students using them - web proxy support is available in android 3+ , works ok if you don't need marketplace.

That sounds quite workable but a bit labour intensive for large numbers

your lucky here - the market doesn't work on wi-fi only models behind proxies

There are a number of SMB solutions for 'droids but most apps don't need to access user areas so this might not be too important

re-imaging android is actually quite easy, depending on the device. I often re-image using ClockworkMod Recovery on desire.

use a google domain and google apps for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, pictures. For everything else Xenapp is what you need - run the windows application on the android with access to the users home directory,

Does anyone has a locked down os? I have been looking at recompiling but it's taking me ages to get everything setup before I can even look at changing the os....

There is some interesting third party software from Learnpad that allows locking down and multiple user accounts on android. Apparently Toshiba are bundling it with their products, I've seen a demo and it looked impressive.

You can lock things down somewhat with Google Apps, but it's still essentially a single user system.

The way of configuring the learnpad using QR codes is interesting.

I have been looking at recompiling

There's a nice GUI someone on the XDA forums made to make the process of compiling CyanogenMod from source a bit easier. Not sure if this will be of any use though?
