Sorry for the thread divert but we currently have around 30 Mobotix cameras here, recording directly to 3 snap nas boxes.

All of this is done through the cameras settings, no additional software.

Due to the poor performance when retrieving footage using MxCC we are looking at Milestone & Mirasys to hopefully improve things.

With Milestone, instead of the camera recording/retrieving directly from the NAS boxes does the milestone software do this?

Thanks

John

Milestone takes the stream from the camera and records it which along with it's database provides you the functionality of being able to search footage.

I think he got his terms mixed up, you can't do wireless PoE!

I'd go for Mobotix cameras. You can record to SD cards IN the camera and only use network bandwidth when you want to review the footage or back it up (over the internet or your network). The image quality is excellent and you can get day/night cameras too.

and what happens if someone breaks/steals the camera itself? you've no idea who, cos they've stolen the evidence...

may sound stupid, but i've known it to happen.

You've got plenty of options actually. If you have the bandwidth, stream the lot to a server, or do full frame rate at the camera while recording to a server when movement is detected at a lower framerate, like 3fps. Either way, they give you flexibility.

We've installed our own using a QNAP box and a number of YCam bullet cameras - they're great as they come as waterproof external cameras with built-in night vision. Very easy to configure, very reliable - stunning picture quality, too - like watching TV!

John,

Your best bet if using milestone is to set up the cameras to record locally and archive off to the NAS boxes. We only keep 6 hours locally, then archive off to NAS storage - as we are using a single raided NAS, we use "Dynamic Paths", which pretty much means each camera is set by default to "Dynamic" and uses \\UNCPath\Storage\ (defined in the app, not per-camera) then the camera's MAC address.

In your setup you would choose where each camera archives its data (if using multiple NAS boxes), as opposed to setting them all to Dynamic.

Hope this helps,

Si

Edit - We keep only 6 hours locally, this can be adjusted to archive off as frequently as you like (Minimum of once per 24hrs).
