It might finally be possible, according to this report, to have cross platform gaming with PCs running Win8 and X360s (and also Windows phones).

If that happens it'd be great. I'd be keen to know if its backward compatible too, so for example a game released last year for pc/x360 can be played or if it will only be games released after Win8 is out

Microsoft merges Windows 8 with Xbox Live ? reghardware

Yep, Windows PCs, WinPho and Xbox 360 users will all be able to play against each other. Now we're talking.

It'll also be great to finally end the [pathetic] console vs. PC gamer feud

although what would happen when the pc gamers absolutely destroy the console gamers in first person games? :D

Then sales of keyboards and mice for consoles will go through the roof

I don't care as long as somebody can point to the fact!

Bizarre how cross-platform worked in Portal 2 for PS3 and PC only, stupid for XBox 360 not to work. That was down to using Steamworks as the platform, which the 360 doesn't support - but it should!

My brother-in-law has a misguided belief that console FPSs are better with a joypad, I look forward to proving that badly wrong.

Although PC players could end up getting thumped at Fifa and co if we had to use mice/keyboards :D

No doubt about FPS's though, I own Black Ops on Xbox and PC and know where the higher skill level sits.

Most people do. Its funny how PC gamers can play console FPSs and still be ok(ish), but put a console gamer on a PC and he will get absolutely thrashed.

TBH I can't for one minute believe that it will last for more than a few months. Once all the console gamers, ie the ones who's money MS care about the most, start moaning they will probably limit access to only PC gamers with a xbox pad - at best.

I personally believe that's more to do with the demographic - there are a lot more people who are console gamers, and a large proportion of those are casual gamers. PC gamers tend to be the type who are really in to it, hence the fact they own PC's capable of running the latest games rather than getting a (comparatively) cheap console to play the games on.

Also, FPS - there's no doubt it's easier to aim with a mouse than a joystick.

I wouldn't say it's easier to aim actually as the general skill level is higher you have to be a better shot to compete at all. Far more crack shots on PC FPS's than Xbox that's for certain.

Seems daft to me.

PC gamers will have an advantage over the console guy on pretty much every game except maybe RPGs.

It will cause problems on games like Halo, I know there is lots of e-penis talk about this but a mouse is just more accurate than a control pad which will put the xbox guys at a huge disadvantage... I can only see this causing problems for what is essential no benefit.

Joypad better then Mouse / Keyboard for a genre? PC user can plug a wired XBox 360 Controller in to level the playing field. ;)
