Experienced Network Engineer £30 - £35k, Middlesex

A position is arising in my team for an experienced network engineer (we run HP ProCurves), who can also manage wireless (Aruba System), and also has a wide experience of Windows Server. We are a VMWare house, with XenApp and XenDesk, so familiarity with these technologies is desireable. This will make the IT Team up to 5 - myself, 2 techs, and an Apple specialist are already here. This position will be vital to the running of the school, so applicants should be professional with a helpful attitude, and should be flexible with regard to hours.

 

A full job spec will be available shortly, which will likley contain additional items I have forgotten at this point!

 

Interviews will be professional, with a third party involved who is highly technical (no tyre kickers need apply).

Hampton School’s IT network is a critical component of the school, for staff, students and management.

 

Hampton therefore requires an experienced person to assist the Network Manager in the installation, configuration and on-going maintenance of these core infrastructure and desktop systems.

 

The candidate should be experienced in the following:

• Wired Networking, preferably with HP ProCurve switches, and have a sound knowledge of networking principles including VLAN’s, VPN’s, LAN’s and WAN’s.

• Wireless Networking, preferably with Aruba based solutions, and is comfortable managing our current 140 AP System.

• Windows Server 2003 knowledge is compulsory, with Windows 2008/2008R2 highly recommended, any candidate must have at least 2 years’ experience supporting Windows Server 2003 or higher technologies. A good knowledge of VMware vSphere 4.x is also preferred.

• Knowledge of Citrix products would be an advantage, specifically XenApp 4.5/5/6 and XenDesktop 4.0/5.0.

 

This is a vital role in the school, and any candidate should be capable of working professionally in a demanding environment.

 

Duties for this role are as follows:

1. Install or assist in installation of all new hardware, systems, and software for both server and networking devices.

2. Plan and support network and computing infrastructure.

3. Monitor system performance and implement performance tuning.

4. Document network problems and resolutions for future reference.

5. Oversee network security.

6. Support administration of servers and server clusters.

7. Assist in troubleshooting analysis of servers, workstations and associated systems.

8. Assist where necessary with general IT duties in the School.

 

Additionally, this role will be required to support, where necessary, the day to day tasks of the department to include user account maintenance and general support enquiries. The general support role will normally be as second line support, however as this is a small team role flexibility is expected.

This would make it 5. One is Apple only, and spread across three sites. One is a junior role, mostly for printer/projector/basic support. Then a general front of house guy, and myself.

Nope. It's a slight re-organisation into front of house, and back office roles, and a more plannning and server side role for me. The three already here will be front of house, this new role will be switches and servers mostly, with planning and project input with myself. We'll both do support for back-end systems.

Sounds like a great job - you would have had my CV but I'm happy in my job now which is out of Education - working not far from there in Brentford. I'm surprised you have had only two enquries though - it's certainly on my level but maybe not on everyone's on the forum as some of the requirements are very specific. EG the Aruba kit. I setup two 800's and a load of AP60's - in my last job and that was quite a challenge for me. [ Along with everything else ! ]

Also, who is more senior...deputy NM or assistant NM?? I realise they are both subordinate to you, however I am curious as to who would be in charge in your absence.

Ok, some answers:

 

3rd party involved, as some of the knowledge required is outside my field, so we want to make sure we get what's expected.

 

Nearest rail station is probably about a mile I guess (Hampton) Bing Maps - Wegbeschreibungen, Routen, Verkehr

 

Deputy is next in chain, so would cover for my absence.

 

As for specifics, if you can cope with HP ProCurves, then the Aruba switches probably wouldn't be too taxing - GUI's and command line access is fairly standard.
