RabbieBurns Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 is there such a thing? Rather than connect via VGA we were thinking of putting in wireless ones to make it easier for the teachers to connect to, and also if we go down the tablet route. Is there such a thing? What is good ones?
RabbieBurns Posted August 25, 2011 Author Posted August 25, 2011 would need to be fully functional eg play videos etc.
jamesfed Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 You can certainly get projectors that run over a LAN (Windows 7 has 'Connect to a network projector' built right into the OS) however I'm not too sure about something that runs over Wi-Fi as you would have bandwidth and latency issues.
kmount Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Used to use the panasonic wireless ones back in the day and they when they worked were great, not so great on video though.
Chris-W- Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Wireless projectors do exist, and for tablets they'd be great for mobile connectivity. The problem though, as you'd expect, is full frame rate video not being processed fast enough. With 802.11N small resolution video could probably cope quite well, but without having one to actually test with, its hard to say. Quick Google search: Wireless projectors
3s-gtech Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 We have a Panasonic one that is no longer used with the WiFi system, it was too laggy and it needed a seperate application to be run that had some permissions issues. Limited resolution killed it too. I now use a couple of the USB to WiFi adaptors, but they're still not great - very poor resolutions abilities.
dhicks Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 is there such a thing? Yes, but you'll probably find it easier and cheaper to have your projector connected to a standard desktop machine and have the tablet connect via VNC or similar to that over wireless. That way the computer running the display has no netwok lag issues and is connected straight to the projector (so full-screen video should wok fine). You can get VNC applications on the iPad and some applications that let you use the iPad / iPhone as a large touchpad, which also work via VNC.
localzuk Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 One thing to remember with wireless projectors is that, in my experience, you end up being connected to the projector OR your wireless network, unless you have 2 wireless network adapters in your computer. In my view, it defeated the point.
AngryTechnician Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 CIE Group have a box that works both as a standard access point and connects to a normal projector (up to WXGA) to allow you to use it over the network (wired or wireless): Clever Little Box: Audio Visual Technology I saw it demonstrated at BETT in 2010 and with the small bit of client-side software it will even stream video overlay over 802.11g without skipping. I'm pretty sure it uses compression to achieve this, and obviously this was an idealised demo, but I was quite impressed nonetheless.
Arthur Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Are there any projectors with WiDi built-in? This looks like a much better solution (assuming you have a laptop which meets Intel's system requirements). NetGear and D-Link both sell adapters which can turn your projector into a Wireless Display capable projector, but it would be nicer if this was a standard feature.
