DVD ripping software

Hi all. I have some copywrite free educational DVD's that I'd like to rip to my laptop but I'm having trouble finding software that will make them small enough. They're all approx 3 hours long and each time I rip them they're about 1Gb, I need to get them smaller than this ideally as I'll be viewing them on my netbook. Some of them are VHS that have been copied to DVD anyway so quality isn't an issue. I just need them to be around 800x600 ish and with basic audio quality as it's all spoken lectures.

 

Can anyone suggest some free software to help? As I said I've tried a couple that I've found but they didn't seem to do a good job.

dvd shrink or handbrake ?

if they are not encrypted you can use dvd decrypter and then use handbrake ?

Um, three hours down to less than a gig means you are going to need to drop that resolution which should be fine as SD tv wa only something like 700 x 500 so you should be ok going a bit lower. Software as above.

Used both methods and works well.

maybe but that still does not allow compacting to a smaller file size , dropping resolution, audio quality or any of that, that literally allows you to break the encryption and create a digital copy of the disc minus encryption

AnyDVD does that.

CloneDVD allows you to set target size and then select audio streams etc.

If you set the output size to 700mb then take a screen grab of the video quality would it match a good divx or xvid with 2 pass etc ??

 

With handbrake you can specify a multitude of things in relation to audio quality , audio type, video output, constant quality, output size etc and I have always found it outputs great quality assuming the input quality of video and or audio is of decent quality.
