ChrisH Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 I have need of an RJ45 to Fibre converter due to the way our Internet connection comes in at one side of the building and the server room is on the other side of the site. The run is over 100m so it will have to be fibre. Our switches are all HP and this will be running into a 5406. I can't seem to find any particular HP ones as they seem to have startech.com ones on their website for which I have asked for prices from my suppliers. Does anyone have any experience with any particular brands (especially with HP switches) or are they something I don't need to worry about too much as they are relatively simple little boxes? SYNACK Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Can you not terminate into a switch and use VLANs to bridge it across your existing infrastructure to where you need it? What you are after are called transcivers and I have used a bunch of them from different random brands. You will want a spare as they only seem to last about a year before burning out and if terminating into a propper transciver module you may want a ups for it to as quite a few of the standalone units have trouble renegotiating after a power cut - at least that was the case with ours Surecom and some othe rrandom no-name brand linking back to a cisco core or a D-Link one. 1

john Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Allied Telesys are the ones to get, lifetime warranty and they just seem to go on forever and ever. I use them when I need standalone units across the campus and they are great, just order them at the right speed as they only work at the speed you buy them. I also only ever use them in pairs of themselves never mix and match the brands.
User3204 Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I have a bunch of Allied Telesyn ones.. they're good and reliable. I just don't need them anymore since I upgraded to GBIC / SFP Gigabit links. I think I have about 30 of them, mostly 100mbit.

tech_guy Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Another thumbs up for Allied Telesyn - they just seem to go on and on whereas other makes we've used seem to suffer from dying power supplies after a couple of years use.
john Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Seen as we have some AT loving here (and I don't mean the AngryTechnician loving) don't forget they make 1, 4 and 12 unit mounting kits for the AT kit which is a good idea, I forgot to order the 4 unit rack kit as I'm growing a pile of them now on the top of my rack for odd fibres jumping around the campus for things now so they do think of a range of things. The 12 unit ones are great they have built in PSUs so no little plug in 12V units needed just an IEC lead needed and you can dual PSU them as well
