Ive said this to a few people that its all well and good going to the gym but you still need to eat sensibily, otherwise you'll prob end up with saggy skin. Eat about 6 meals a day but only little meals, this building up your matablism, eat fruit and veg, plus carbs and meat. You can still get good calories from protein but dont eat too much of it. It you eat pasta, make sure you burn it off. Also, dont weigh your self every night, do it once a week at the most. It takes about 5 days for the food you have eaten today to turn into fat so if you eat something today and jump on the scales say tomorrow or the next day and you dont notice a change, dont be surprised, the food hasnt been turned to fat yet. Also, try to drink a lot of water, this been one of the best kind of fluids.

Its ok burning off calories at the gym and thinking, well thats the few biscuits burnt off but you have to remember that be use calories for all sorts, keeping warm, moving etc.

Ive just read that you have burnt above 5000 calories.. bloody hell mate... you need to calm down! Your body will only burn so many fat calories at a time and then once it has run out it will start attacking your muscles which you dont want to do and then when you start eating it will turn the food into fat, so its a never ending cycle. What you could do is when you have been to the gym, have a glass of milk and a banana when you get home... this way you are filling your self up with protein and good fats and energy from the banana.

Some people might lose 1 stone in 3 weeks, but you might not. Everyone is different. Just take comfort in you knowing you are doing gym + eating healthy and it will eventually start to drop off! Keeping that routine up will be good after a few months, but deffo up from 1.5k calories.

Someone suggested eating straight after exercise, this is a good thing to do. You have about a 45 minute window for your body to make best use of it - a bananna, jacket potatoe or even a slice of toast just to restore a bit of energy levels.

All very laudable but can I just say that I don't like the way some of these diets describe food - for example the Slimming World diet talks about 'sins' and some people on various forums have talked about 'bad' foods.

There are NO bad foods.....

Just foods that you should eat in moderation. (would you rather have a small portion of butter with no additives, or a large portion of one of these 'spreads' which contain goodness knows what chemicals?)

It is not good for you to see some foods as 'good' or 'bad' - not least because the so-called experts change their minds all the time about what is good for you and what is not. Eggs are a good example - they were considered to increase cholesterol but now that has been discredited. Also it doesn't bode well for your future. You shouldn't be on a diet, you should just eat healthily.

In my opinion - most of the issues with weight come from portion size. If you look at the europeans, they eat well - plenty of pasta, red wine, chocolate, protein, plenty of veg etc - but in moderation, and they don't suffer the obesity problems that we have.

I think people don't realise how small a proper sized meal is.

As for exercise - you must have rest days built in to your program or you are in danger of damaging your body.

It is good to see that a lot of you have concerns about your weight but remember it must be a whole-of-life thing. Many of you will have gained and lost the same couple of stone over and over!

No, I'm not an angel but I do try to be good - just come back off holiday and am compensating by eating sparingly for the next few days - light, healthy meals and no snacks (she said hopefully :))

Oh, and if any of you enjoy dancing - Zumba on the Wii is really fun and works well. Or join a class!

we changed our eating ways a few months back. wife wanted to lose weight so we looked at our diets. as witch says, no bad foods, just food in moderation. our portion size has gone down, and we eat a lot more salad with meals and a lot more fruit.

fresh/frozen meat rather than the boxed crumb/batter stuff will always be better too. it will take time, but it will happen. bearing in mind we dont do any gym work, this is just from eating differently, and my wife has already lost just under a stone in about a month.

It's all about the moderation ;o) In 2006 I weighed nearly 17.7 stone, and had my own gravational orbit. Was awesome for birthday parties and pass the parcel games.

I kept to the below until 2 years ago, when I weighed just 14 stone and was built like an outhouse (Granted, was out in Cyprus for 2 months being run ragged, but still!) - I got lax, and about 5 months ago ended up back just shy of 16 stone and started back on it again.

Breakfast - Porridge with bannana (When I can be bothered making it!) or a cereal bar

Lunch - Either Tuna Pasta or Fruit Salad from Asda

Dinner - Pastabake (Without cheese), or fish with rice

I go to the gym 4 times a week and do for 3 of those days:

1.5 mile run (Only seem to finish at 11 mins, but I want 10:30 - only been trying since 2008 to beat that!)

15 mins on the cross trainer

15 mins rowing

15reps x 4 sets - Chest Press (45kg)

15reps x 4 sets - lat pull down

15reps x 4 sets - chest pull

15reps x 4 sets - sit ups

10-20 mins in the steam room

On the fourth day I just do a 1.5 mile run, 44 press ups, and 50 sit ups, and then go for a swim before perv...I mean lounging in the steamroom.

It can be boring just pounding away on a treadmill, or running on your own - so what I do is pick a spot in the distance and see how fast I can get there, and then pick another (Or in a treadmill's case, see how far I can get within 3 mins and see if I can beat it withinthe next 3). Or push yourself hard and see how many people you can freak out grunting and screaming as you pass the 1 mile mark in 5 mins...

the other thing to bear in mind is that your body is incapable of burning fat when insulin is present in your blood stream, so having a mars bar and going to the gym is unproductive. Have something protein based, because foods which are sugary, or are easilly broken down to sugars, like cereals and pasta, cause insulin levels to rise to allow your body to process the sugar. it takes between 1 and 4 hours for insulin levels to drop once you have raised them, so waiting untill after that time will make a more productive fat burn. Also, at the same time, don't go to the gym hungry, not unless you like feeling faint...

That isn't really as healthy as it could be though, is it? Way too many carbs and where are the vegetables and calcium etc?

Good for you for being so dedicated but I think your diet could use a bit of modification

I thought that was healthy :confused2: for the rice, I tend to mix peas, egg, green peppers, and anything else.

I've been reading up since Wednesday, as diet/food is one of those subjects in our house where you don't question it, but you're expected to know and get on with it (If that makes sense?).

Think I'll ease off the pasta, as I'm not getting any thinner and might be able to shift it all quickly if I switch to something healthier!

...Has anyone thought of starting a EduFatclub? I bet there are loads of people who would benefit from a buddy system to co-motivate with, or a friendly text in the morning to get you out the door?...

Well here go I created this group and never used it so that is good start as any :)
