P
ersonally, I'd say this job is an excellent position within a great school. The pupils are well behaved, the staff are friendly and there is very much a 'whole team' spirit amongst the staff (none of the 'them and us' that some schools suffer from).

I just have one question: How good is the documentation being left by the previous encumbent?

Would be hard to follow in your footsteps generally, even without knowing there are lots of homemade apps and custom code / scripts etc.

Documentation is quite abundant - and increasing daily. I am in post until the 19th August, and from now until then I am basically just writing documentation.

There's a complete network map, projector maps, lists of suppliers, what servers do, how to use much of the custom software (ie. how to keep it up to date), a manual for the phone system (asterisk based) etc...

The custom systems (till & merit system) will have their full code available, but I will continue to provide support for them once I've left, by email.

Interviews are a bit late? They commence on 12th, if somebody has to give 4 weeks notice, that's middle of October.

I'll be leaving the post on the 20th August, so there will be a temporary solution in place until then (I believe a company is going to be asked in to provide tech support until someone starts).

The new start date isn't ideal, but its just how its ended up working out.

Hi localxuk,

Thanks for posting this job, i'll apply asap.

I just wanted to confirm why there's two virtualisation solutions listed in the person spec under knowledge of?

Are you migrating from XenServer to ESXi?

Or are you using XenServer for a diskless thin-client solution?

Thanks,

Matthew

We have a XenServer setup mainly, but with a single VMWare ESXi host and a single VMWare Server instance (as this needs hardware access such as RS232).

The ESXi was the first one we set up, as XenServer wasn't free at that time, but rather than fiddle and move things, we left it as it was (why break something that works fine?)

We also have 3 XenApp instances installed on the XenServer boxes, and XenServer provides better performance for it than VMWare.

Where you off to then?

Aren't middle closing? Oh wait your an Academy?

I'm off to Bristol, to a 1100 pupil trust (3 schools in one building).

Middle schools in Somerset are still going strong, but yes this school is an academy as of June 1st.

What sort of code stuff did you knock up? and is any of it available for public domain?

A cashless catering system and a school housepoint system mainly - but some other small tools too (id card printer for example). None of it is in the public domain at the moment, as it is a jumble and kinda built just for MMS's systems. At some point, I will look at tidying it all up and 'productising' it, so it can be installed elsewhere though.
