Optiplex 980 Slowness

Hi,

 

We have been using fog server for 2 years without any major issues and have found it to be extremely impressive for an open source program. We've now got a new batch of Dell Optiplex 980 machines which are a lot slower than our other PCs to image. The speed when deploying an image is about 80MiB/min and it takes about 3 hours to send a 15GB image down when it normally takes 20mins. Also when imaging 1 of these machines the PXE boot on other machines (Optiplex 980's and other models) is extremely slow and this affects the boot up time of them. If I pause/end the deployment then the PXE boot speed goes back to normal again.

 

I'm not an expert on fog or ubuntu so if anyone has any ideas what i could do to fix this issue it would be most appreciated.

Might be worth trying a different kernel for the 980's, if you haven't already tried.

Just had a look at the switch and the PC's 1Gig nic is running at 10Mb/s (100Mb/s switch port) and the FOG server is 1Gb/s. That explains the slow imaging but why should that affect other machines when booting and going through the PXE boot process?

it wouldnt most of the time the slowness is caused by the wrong kernel on the fog server

How do you update the kernel?

click on the infomation button then on the left click on the kernel updates link. then you should see a list of kernels that you download into fog, see this site to find out what kernel to use WorkingDevices - FOGProject Wiki
