Had some Old RM Celeron 600's that I upgraded to 256mb RAM to run Win2000 on my Ranger Network - now the sods wont shut down - I have been all over the place looking for an answer - any ideas

Usually a driver problem. Try upgrading your drivers too.

After the Bios flash - I went onto the RM site and downloaded every single driver to make sure that there were no 98 legacy stuff in the image - it only happens on that generation of PC as I had some OSIS ones from Capita so its got to be something common

Power management either in the BIOS or on your screen saver tab on display settings goto power options and its in there somewhere.

If that is the case or for some reason it is off you may find that your new images will BSOD on loading if you turn it back on.

Power Down the Computer After Shutdown

This tweak sets the XP machine to power off completely rather than stop at the prompt advising users it's now safe to power off the machine.

 

 

[start] [Run] [Regedit]

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.

Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: PowerdownAfterShutdown

Setting for Value Data: [0 = Disabled / 1 = Enabled]

Exit Registry and Reboot

Try this it worked for me

I just had the very same thing about a month ago when I upgraded a room to Windows XP.

 

Using Windows 98, the machines shutdown automatically, then after a clean Install of XP, they just went to the "Its now safe to turn your computer off" screen, I had to upgrade my Bios, BUT after the Bios had been brought upto date, I had to re-install Windows XP because it didn't have the correct Bios settings before, the correct Power Management Drivers and bits and bobs wern't present, after a Re-Install on the new Bios all was well.

 

I then just ghosted the machine with the correct settings, installed the Bios on the other machines and then copied the ghost image over

I remember this problem years ago - I upgraded on a non supported/ ACPI compliant motherboard. In device manager > show hidden devices > disable advanced ACPI support - did the trick - it was/is documented on an XP Shutdown problem site here: http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

I just upgraded a old 9x machine to win 2k got the same problem! This is what I did

 

Start/Control Panel/Power options/APM/

 

Checked (Enable Power Management Support) checkbox

 

Try this if my first post dont work

HI,

 

This problem occurs quite regularly with our PC's - dead easy to solve

 

Go to Device Manager, Under the View tab click Show Hidden Devices - you will find a new device shown with a cross through it - simply right click this and enable it and hey presto you're machines will shut down
