[android] Google Maps update: off-line cache

My Google maps has just upgraded on Android (now at 5.7.0) and under the 'Labs' section there's an option to download a map area to storage.

This will be handy for use abroad or where you predict poor phone coverage.

Only one way to find out..... hmmmm... I think the mapping data is pretty efficient, so it could actually be a goer.

Thinking about it, it might be worth doing as a matter of course for your area. Or my area in my case.

This will speed up loading and avoid hassle if there's a poor signal.

 

I might try it later to see how it works.

Went to London on Friday, cached the data for the wimbledon area to save on data costs before I left.

 

Worked pretty well.

I use the app Maverick, it lets you cache maps from a number of sources.
