My Google maps has just upgraded on Android (now at 5.7.0) and under the 'Labs' section there's an option to download a map area to storage.

This will be handy for use abroad or where you predict poor phone coverage.

Saw the article about the update on Lifehacker this morning, thought it might help with SkyDroid (golf distance app. that also uses Google Maps), but it doesn't :(

Thinking about it, it might be worth doing as a matter of course for your area. Or my area in my case.

This will speed up loading and avoid hassle if there's a poor signal.

I might try it later to see how it works.

Went to London on Friday, cached the data for the wimbledon area to save on data costs before I left.

Worked pretty well. :)
