dezt Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 I'm having an issue at the moment, i can't seem to get any Vlan talking to the default Vlan (1), I have my internet connection plugged in to the default vlan so nobody can access the internet. Is there a way to allow my other 14 Vlans to route to the internet through Vlan 1? Or should I be doing something else to allow internet access? Routing is working between my other Vlans, so PC's in the ICT Vlan can get an IP address from the DHCP server in the servers Vlan, it's just the internet that doesn't work.

Have you set a default route as per one of my earlier posts? Also, you need to set the default gateway on your client pc's to the routing switch IP through DHCP..

adamf Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Is 10.68.40.1 the IP address of the device provided by your ISP? Not sure if it's the same where you are, but I have ip route 0.0.0.0 10.59.100.1 (10.59.100.1 is the device provided by Synetrix) rather than ip route 0.0.0.0 10.59.100.6 (10.59.100.6 being my default gateway)
dezt Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 10.68.40.1 is the address we used to use for the default gateway, so I think it is the ip of the Internet router. My default vlan has the ip of 10.68.40.2/27 so I'm thinking that may be why I have an issue, if I change the ip range to something else would that work, I'll try it tomorrow morning, I hope so.

Can you ping the routing switch using it's ip address in VLAN 1? It may be that the firewall/router/whatever you use for your internet connection needs to know your new internal lan ip ranges and needs routes set up back to your switch.
dezt Posted August 23, 2011 Author Posted August 23, 2011 I can't ping the default vlan, i get a destination net unreachable error. If I try and ping any other vlan ip it works fine and I get a reply.
adamf Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Is there anything connected to the default vlan? If not, that will explain why you can't ping it. You can only ping a vlan IP if there is something connected to it. You could paste your config onto here and see if we can spot anything that doesn't look correct.

What I did have until yesterday was 2 vlans, 1 for curriculum and 1 for admin, there was no routing on them, they were just setup with different ip ranges and different servers and clients. That seemed to work, I think i'll go back to the old setup for now, to make sure everything is working, then look into getting everything planned for the next holiday period to setup the vlans, when I don't have any other jobs to do, at the moment everything else is being put back, which isn't good as i've only got 2 weeks left to figure everything out.

The 5406 doesn't support acting as a DHCP server. The ip helper address points to servers on your network providing ip allocation or boot services, so it points to your dhcp server and if you for instance have a network boot server you would also point to that.
