laserblazer Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 A few years ago, I took this video. There was still heaps of work to do and on Friday it's the grand opening. There are 60 odd boats parked up and we are going to have a big festival over the weekend. 1
alan-d Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Nice one Have the Tow paths been restored too?
localzuk Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Its always nice to hear of more of the network being restored and opened. The canals in this country are an amazing legacy with so much potential!
BenABF Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Wish the one near me would hurry up and be finished so I've got a nice route to cycle to and from work. Abruptly finishes at the moment and need to walk along a foot path with about 10 stiles to join up to a road. They reckon another 15 years
teejay Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Excellent, always good for us BOFH's to have another place to dispose of bodies
MK-2 Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Excellent, always good for us BOFH's to have another place to dispose of bodies you've not seen the depth of the canal out the back of my house then. unless you were looking to dispose of the bodies of the borrowers you'd have a tough job
teejay Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 you've not seen the depth of the canal out the back of my house then. unless you were looking to dispose of the bodies of the borrowers you'd have a tough job Ah, so only suitable for use when the user has accidentally fallen into the industrial blender, ok.
laserblazer Posted June 30, 2011 Author Report Posted June 30, 2011 Nice one Have the Tow paths been restored too? Yes, nice new towpaths. A lot are surfaced. The canal runs past a large housing estate and the High School so the kids there can now walk/cycle/sail from home to school, without crossing a road. 1
wizzard Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Ah, so only suitable for use when the user has accidentally fallen into the industrial blender, ok. Now that's an episode of "Will it Blend?" I'd love to see. joking, I don't really want to se humans being blended.
laserblazer Posted June 30, 2011 Author Report Posted June 30, 2011 I don't really want to se humans being blended. That reminds me of ski chase in a James Bond film.
Ric_ Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Yes, nice new towpaths. A lot are surfaced. The canal runs past a large housing estate and the High School so the kids there can now walk/cycle/sail from home to school, without crossing a road. Do you think you will get much uptake in sailing to school? Just think... you'll have to add another option to your travel questionnaires.
beeswax Posted June 30, 2011 Report Posted June 30, 2011 Nice bit of film. It looks a very bucolic scene. When you've edited together a video of the current state of the canal, please post it here so we can see the progress made.
laserblazer Posted June 30, 2011 Author Report Posted June 30, 2011 It looks a very bucolic scene What's an eating disorder got to do with it?
jinnantonnixx Posted July 4, 2011 Report Posted July 4, 2011 This is a snap from my daily commute to work on a towpath - nice eh? Admittedly other parts of the route get quite industrial, but I'm pleased to say that the canals around here have been improved dramatically in the last decade.
laserblazer Posted July 4, 2011 Author Report Posted July 4, 2011 The Water Festival over the weekend has been brilliant. Around 100 boats and the park and town packed with people. The weather was perfect. Real ale was £2.80 a pint and loads of good bands to entertain. The icecream man must have made a fortune.
soveryapt Posted July 4, 2011 Report Posted July 4, 2011 I'm tempted to try the cycle to work along the canal myself .. a section of the Leeds Liverpool (Foulridge to Church to be precise) but I seem to remember (from canoeing it) there is a ruddy great tunnel which I would have to circumnavigate .. so it might be more hassle than it's worth .. lol .. Always great to hear about more of the heritage being opened again .. it's a shame that a lot of the old railway network seems to be built upon or block up and stuff now if you ask me .. there's only so much that the restoration groups can do I guess, but every little helps (restoration sponsored by Tesco .. lol)
