Similarly surprised when I read that it's the 20 year anniversary of the release of Peal Jam's "Ten" (the first Album I bought on CD) and G'nR's Use your Illusion 1 & 2 which I got as a present for my 18th!! Gosh I feel old.

Never managed to complete Sonic at all but then I was more of a Super Mario devotee.

Happy Birthday Sonic :)

is it just me who thought the master system versions were better as they were quite a lot harder to actually complete form what i remember

Was it Sonic 2 or 3 in the tube where you had to get the rings? That one was easier, then the one on the planet and you had to get all the red Blue balls?

Those sucked in Sonic 1. Could not stand them! Can't remember what reward you got for collecting all 6 of them though! :)

Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System was harder than the MegaDrive one, at least I think was.

Collecting the Emeralds within the levels and not on the 'special stages' meant you only got 1 shot to collect each one, and once you had it you could not die otherwise you would lose it!

The 'Labyrinth' levels always drove me mad, all underwater and looking out for those little air bubbles to refill your air was a nightmare, especially when you didn't have an air gauge to let you know how much/little air you had left!

the music used to indicate though didnt it? or was that mega drive only? as the music got faster it meant you were running out of air, right up until you got the BWAP BWAP as sonic took his last breath and floated there :p

Not sure, though I don't recall the music helping. You got a "3......2.....1....." counter over Sonic's head as a very last warning, that's all I remember.

i'm sad, but knew i'd find it :p this is the music i meant

I owned the Master System copy, utterly hard and took me years as a small kid to complete. The trickiest was the airship level where they gave you no rings at all. If you were hit just once you were out and cannon balls came flying out of nowhere. Jungle had some utterly hard jumps too, "I beat the boss! *Slip, fall, die and back to square 1*"

But one of the most fun games I have played. Oh, and you couldn't pick your rings up if you were hit. Once you lost them, they were gone! :D (or when you hit 100 rings for a new life, the counter reset to 0).

i remember the year sonic 2 came out, i asked for it for xmas as I had a game gear. I got given it on MAster System cartridge, with the Game gear -> Master system converter, and my sister got a whole master system. I remember feeling cheated haha.
