You don't get a free FULL MS licence when using hyper-v unless..

A few posts on EG have mentioned being able to install 2008R2 standard in hyper-v using the licence of the host 2008R2. What I have found is that licence is only valid if your host system is only used as a hyper-v server and nothing else. The instant you use it for anything like being a print server it voids the virtual licence.

 

Just wanted to post my findings as I didn't know this.

Indeed that is the case. However, if you use Server Enterprise, this allows you to use 4 client licenses on top of an install just used for Hyper-V.

I actually didn't know this. We have 3 Hyper-V servers on Enterprise licences, 2 are doing nothing else, but one is running Backup Exec purely because I needed to use USB. So I cannot do this?

So if I run Hyper-V on the TIN and then buy a Datacentre 2008 R2 license I can run as many copies of 2008 R2 as the host can handle?

Enterprise is per host, though, and data center is per processor; assuming you want to run more than 4 VMs you probably have at least two sockets filled in your mobo, therefore cost for the host is £364

 

Education pricing is much lower than that, though...

No, Enterprise allows 4 simultaneous installs of Windows Server running on a single host, fully licensed. You can run as many VMs as you want on a HyperV server, if you have other licenses as well (or, say, you're running linux vms).

I paid £81 per processor i.e. £162 per virtual host - so if that price was just for a server with two processors, you're about right, if that was the price per processor...

 

(enterprise was £80 per server iirc, and standard only £25)

Ive just activated my datacentre install and have now just installed server 2008 R2 enterprise.. It is asking for me to activate..

Should I need to if I am fully licensed for 4+1?

With Datacentre, you're licensed for 1 host and unlimited vms (not 4+1). You will need to activate though, as there's no difference really between VM installs and host installs.
