Solutions for cabled network access in a CDT room ?

Hi

 

We've encountered a problem with our CDT room. We can't fit and use wireless access points because all of the heavy metal equipment is causing signal problems so we are having to look at hard wired cabling solutions for a CDT room.

 

We need 16 RJ45 sockets along a long worktable which is about 10m long and they can either drop down from the ceiling or be built into the bench.

 

If anyone out there has been involved in a similar development I'd like to know how you set this up in your school ?

I'd guess you want them like the power sockets in Science Labs are so they are up out of the way a bit on an angle and keeps them away from spills etc.... Should be a simple job for your friendly cablers. Do you have a pet cabling company / do it yourself? Make the cables yourself... thats what all you need is CAT5e cable and crimpers

But Thats what i do i try and cable everything because we dont have a the best wireless system

If your little darlings are going to be soldering on the benches, consider using metal trunking / faceplates. Ours have an annoying habit of discovering what they can melt with a soldering iron and plastic trunking doesn't last long.

thats very true... But then .. The teachers job is to keep an eye on the students..

 

Very good and very vaild point though DO you think the school would invest in matel trunking?

Our current thinking is for drop down sets of sockets that can be hung up on the ceiling when the laptops are not in use, another alternative would be drop down pillars. It seems to me that we just need to get some network cabling companies in to give some quotes and discuss some ideas though obviously if anyone has see a good solution for a CDT room that does not a specific area for its IT please let me know. Obviously we would prefer wireless but that is not possible because of the interference from all of the equipment.

You may not neccessarily need metal trunking.

 

If you have access to the underside of the desk/bench then pvc trunking along there feeding through the desk/bench into the metal angled back boxes would be good enough.

Yes, using the underside of the desk is a good idea.
