Create shortcut to a program that isn't installed on server

Hi

 

Sorry if this has been posted before but I can't find anything.

 

All I want to do is create a shortcut to a program that isn't installed on the server (installed on network pc and it wont let me create the shortcut on the server) so I can put the shortcut on the user's desktop to the program when there desktop loads through GP (if that makes sense)!

 

Its probably really simple but my brain isn't working this morning :?

You can stick it in the All users profile start menu on the machine. Assuming you haven't disabled All users profile integration in GPOs.

Are you asking how to create the shortcut without windows shouting at you about that location not exisiting or asking how to push that shortcut to the student's desktop? or both?

Sorry I don't think I've explained very well... I want to be sat at the server & create the shortcut but the program itself isn't installed on the server so it wont let me create a shortcut to a program that doesn't exist.

 

Then when the shortcut is created I can put it in the correct folder where it will get its redirected folder from (that bit I know!!)

can you not just copy the shortcut that was created by the application from the machine, back to the server?

Good idea but not always as the PC might be offline or in use when the shortcut needs creating...

Then you can likely address the shortcut using unc paths if the drive is shared

 

goto start>run then do \\\c$

 

then navigate from there.

Yes NiJ that would be the sensible thing to do but more genrally you use VBS or anyother WSH friendly scripting language to create arbitrary shortcuts.

what about creating the shortcut and then just saving it to your my documents and then add/remove the short cut as and when needed.

 

Im not sure if that is the best way to go about it or i have misunderstood what is being asked

I've had this before and got around it by doing the following:

 

Recreate the folder path on the machine you're trying to make the shortcut on ie make a folder c:\program files\proggy\ then create a text file or similar and rename it proggy.exe (or whatever). Create the shortcut then remove the items you just made. You might have an icon issue but at least it'll run.
