Am I correct in thinking that you can obtain a database from Capita for SIMS which is all fictional data, for demostrating?

I'm going to in house train some staff on some parts of SIMS and would rather have a set of fictional data than use a copy of the schools database.

Heres for hoping!

Thanks, Ed.

Indeed, the one they use is Green Abbey with the infamous blackA user..

addition: though i prefer to use real data on a test server, because the trainees tend to pay a bit more attention, especially if you ask them to load up their classes individually where applicable. if you know the students, it also helps to pick on known troublemakers as examples.

Green Abbey - that's the one! Do you know where I can obtain a copy of this from. I looked on SupportNet but it wasn't very obvious!

Thanks

I obtained a copy from my LA, have you asked them? Fun little database though, can set up a test server on your laptop and mess around with config files, run practice backups, look around the SQL structure (using mine for SQL training hehe) and if it all goes wrong, restore it from the original copy.

It shouldn't be avalible to schools only LA's and SIMS Partners. Also you've got Waters Edge which is Primary data. Shame there isn't a routine to randomize the data.

I'm sure schools can get a copy. Maybe if they ask nicely, or email the distribution address at capita.

Depending on what you need to show, you could always do a clean install with the installable ISO and just make up some data. It might even be fun thinking up all those names, denice the menace, wimpy, brains etc.

It's under Support|Training Data Sets. If it's available to you.

Otherwise, as has been said, make a copy of your school's database and make a few changes to logins (just in case)

No I'm pretty sure it's a big no, no for schools having Green Abbey\Waters Edge, as it's been configured for training which is the way Support Units cover their costs. This hasn't changed has it @PhilNeal?

Did look at bulk importing loads of fake data using the SIMS API and creating my own, but they are only 24 hrs in the day :)

I think we had a secondary school ask about this once as they wanted to try "training" some primary school users, and it turned out LA's are not allowed to give out copies of the Green Abbey or Waters Edge data to Schools.

Why not take a backup of the live data and load it into a VM for training? Sometimes using a schools data has more relevance.

My thoughts exactly. Much more fun to exclude joe bloggs for incontinence and give your entire timetable away to the TA.
