Interform Competitions...."e-sports"

Ive just been approached by a member of staff asking for ideas for a possible interform competition, as most schools we have interform football, cricket, basketball etc.

but there are many kids who dont want to or dont get to take part, and hes looking for ideas on how we could perhaps have them compete as a team using computers over the network perhaps...obviously we cant do something like "interform call of duty" because of age restriction and obviously you would need 10 or so install discs and product keys. But does anyone know of anything avalible online which would be geared towards schools and this kind of idea?

we have all sorts of house competitions here outside of the usual sporty ones.

 

music/drama/dance/art/debating, etc.

i wouldnt just limit yourself to something on the computers, especially as we all know teenagers and co-operative gaming aren't really the best mix!

Only thing I can think of would be a 'Paintball' mod for said Call of Duty type games.

I contemplated a Rome: Total War club for a while, the game is cheap and would run on our dated machines, and it was vaguely historical and educational.

 

Also considering installing Minecraft, not sure how you would make it into a competition though...

Thats my only problem, it would have to be a team game or something, i like the idea of a paintball mod for CoD but its buying the software thats the issue, as i doubt there would be a budget for that kind of thing...ill have a nosey through the opensource stuff, im sure i can find something on there maybe perhaps lol

if it definitely has to be a computing competition. then why not 1 x wii. 4 x wiimotes and 1 x copy of wii sports. probably pick it up as a deal for about 200 if you look around. it fulfills the sports and the gaming parts

I'm assuming it's the kids not wanting to do physical activity that's the reason behind the request, making them use a Wii will just antagonise them

true but theres a big difference between playing tennis and holding the wiimote to move your wrist three quarters of an inch to hit the ball.

 

if the idea is they dont want to do sport, really there should be questions as to why. we're hardly going to help a country of obese children by saying "dont want to do sport? sit here and play call of duty instead"

I had to do cross country runs in the snow at school (wearing shorts and a vest) and only got out of it if I feigned death or had a legit sick note.

Hi, can I suggest an open source paintball game that runs very well within our school network. I spent ages talking to the developer who was more than happy to let me modify certain areas (eliminations instead of kills, and a few sound file mods). Thought I'd covered everything and presented it to SLT only to have it refused (we're a Christian school but I thought paintball would be ok).

I've now gone to Trackmania Nations and I'm waiting to hear back from them. If it gets refused again, I just won't bother.
