sidewinder Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I'm looking to link our IT suite and server room with fibre, and being such a short run (about 50m) pre terminated fibre is attractive, mainly because of price. However all our current CAT5 between the 2 locations runs on the outside of a building (although most of it has a covered roof) as it is a much easier run. If I was to buy some pre-terminated fibre and follow the same run (putting it inside conduit though) would that be safe/secure/recommended? I know if fibre runs outside it needs to be protected, but if it was inside conduit screwed to the wall all the way, with very little chance of it getting wet or severed, surely the risk is minimal?
Andrew_C Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Wet shouldn't be a problem and as far as I'm aware the outer doesn't degrade, or if it does, this doesn't affect transmission. You are only really protecting against mechanical damage. Might be worth labelling it in some way not visible to the kids.

Boredguy Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 We purchased some pre-terminated fibre last summer and it's fine outside as it's got the standard plastic coating on it. The majority of our fibre is run round the outside of the building and overhead wires as the cost to put ducting in was too high. We've had fibre running outside for over 12 years, and it's still in the same condition today as it was when installed. It's also quite happy lying in a puddle of water.
CyberNerd Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Our kids drop too much litter for standard fibre to be viable. We few years back we put fibre in underground conduit for some 'temporary' huts. Within a month the rats had eaten through it. Armoured cable isn't that much more expensive and it will save it being re-laid, just in case.

Although I seem to be struggling to find many places that supply it pre terminated. From a quick search the only one that did seemed to be OM1 Any suggestions for suppliers?

Does it matter for a short run? For patch panels, can I simply buy any loaded fibre patch panel? Such as this ST Loaded Fibre Patch Panels
CyberNerd Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 TBH I wouldn't worry about it for such a short Run. OM3 is technically the correct thing to do for 10GbE.
