I am after a basic webcam viewer, like it was in XP, but for Windows 7, as it doesn't have one. We just need an application that will display what the webcam sees, and be able to take pictures of that.

The webcams are Logitech, however are bundled with bloatware when it comes to their version of a viewer.

if its found ur webcam then u can find the driver on internet

Like I said, we have the drivers that are provided by Logitech, however they are full of bloatware, and provide features we do not wish students to access. I am looking for an alternative way to view the webcam, and take a screenshot. Nothing more, nothing less.

We already have the Windows 7 drivers, provided by Logitech from their support website. But the webcam doesn't work unless you install the Logitech crap software. The drivers themselves work, however I haven't got a decent viewer to view the webcam.

You aren't understanding. The drivers aren't the problem. The viewing software is.

Logitech drivers work.

Logitech webcam viewing software = crap.

I want something to replace Logitech's viewing software. Something which is like Windows XP's default viewer.

VLC or media player classic can do this. For MPC just run the standalone file and click file > open device. Provided your camera's drivers are installed, it should show in the list. I'm sure it's similar in VLC which is also higly rated. I know with MPC you can select to save images in JPG, BMP or PNG format too. Hope this helps!

I pointed that out a few posts up also. Whatever software you find, taking the actual photo is the easiest part. Printscreen, start > accessories > programs > paint > paste > save.

I know that, but I'd like to find some software that incorporates the two.

VLC Player - File > Open Capture Device. To take a snapshot, Video > Snapshot. Done.

Same with Media Player Classic.

Might also be worth downloading vidcap32.exe and trying it out on Win7 on the offchance that Logitech continues to install VFW drivers under Win7. (vidcap32 being the basic WinXP webcam software)

I was trying to think of the name of that little exe - vidcap!

I also recommend that for its simplicity - it also allows tweaking for webcam settings.

VidCap is looking good, but it doesn't automatically append file extensions onto the end of a saved image, which is annoying.

On Windows XP, the webcam loads within Explorer.

Here's a more detailed explination of what the students do:

1) Plug the webcam in

2) Use Windows Explorer (drop down menu) to browse to the webcam

3) The webcam would then load within Windows Explorer

4) They use the option on the left called 'Take a Picture' (or something along those lines)

5) The snapshot/image is then saved into their My Pictures, but also displayed underneath where the webcam is displayed in Windows Explorer.

I hope that is a clear explination of that they do. We don't want to record videos, just to take snapshots.

The webcam doesn't appear as a TWAIN device. It appears in Devices and Printers, though not in Computer. Double clicking the webcam in Devices and printers simply show the Properties/Device Info of the webcam.

It used to show within the irfanview file menu under the twain devices even if not on the main computers devices page .. worth a shot installing it if it still does and does what you're after .. :)

I have already tried, and it doesn't appear within IrfanView as a TWAIN device. :(

Sorry to bump up this thread, but I have another question. Webcam Viewer appears to be the best solution, however, the captured images (saved as JPGs) only save in the same location as the executable. It creates a sub folder, and dumps the images in there. This isn't ideal for us, as we want the images to go directly in the home folder of the user. We don't want to have the executable in the users' home folder either. Somehow we need to redirect that folder to S:\, which is the map for their home folder. Junctions is just awkward, and we can't think of any other solutions.
