Hard disk disposal

I know its probably been covered but I just want a simple answer on this one. Will be chucking away some old PCs, if the hard drives have only got a standard school image on them then do I need to make more of an effort to destroy them or permanently stop them from working? There shouldnt be a data security issue to worry about.

A power drill, DBAN ( using secure erase option ) , hammer or the likes ?

I always 'decommission' HDDs, just in case.

 

For laptops a satisying encounter with a blunt instrument shatters the drives.

For desktops, the HDD is usually deconstructed by my teenage son... actually, I generally let him loose on the whole box and by the time he's taken every last thing to bits and played with the magnates in the HDD, etc there's no chance of anything ever working again!

I just bash the discs with a hammer (when there's no sensitive data on the drives) for PCs - standard school image. Usually drive a nail through too, then smash the controller chips. It's fun

Every machine that leaves the district gets its drive destroyed, even if it a student machine. This way if something confidential ever did get on the outside you've got yourself covered from that angle when questions are asked. Two holes drilled through desktop drives, and a big blunt object for 2.5" drives.

every hdd that comes out of our machines goes down to DT for the kids to put drills through.
