kennysarmy Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Our impending new head of ICT has asked me to look at the possibility of having an internal website for the pupils to learn how to do ftp uploads of the sites they design in lessons. This is not something I have done before... I have some (virtual) windows servers not under much load that I have earmarked for this. OR if I have a good guide am happy to try my hand at a linux offering. Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks.
cpjitservices Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Linus LAMP server I'll give you a link I actually ran this from home for web-hosting for a while it's dead easy!! and you get full FTP server aswell. It's really easy just follow the guide. How to Setup a Dedicated Web Server for Free | Nettuts+ 1
Steve21 Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Personally I'd suggest "not" going along the main server route. Just get an old box (or even computer) you're not using and set it up as a standalone style server. Then no matter what they do, break, fiddle with. It's a closed thing. That's how my old college had it setup. Also means the kids/teachers can setup any extra things they need, addons etc, without going through techies and/or breaking everything! (doooom ) Steve 1
zag Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Windows and IIS can do this fine, no need for any extra software.

webman Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 I documented our setup for a similar thing a while ago, might be useful: FTP and Web server [bishop Barrington IT Wiki]
kennysarmy Posted May 24, 2011 Author Posted May 24, 2011 Sorry - that looks way over my head for a LINUX newbie...
cpjitservices Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 anything in particular which you need a hand with ??
CyberNerd Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Our impending new head of ICT has asked me to look at the possibility of having an internal website for the pupils to learn how to do ftp uploads of the sites they design in lessons. Nice to see the head of ICT has a firm grip on 40yr old technology (ftp). Perhaps suggesting a CMS would be more engaging for the facebook generation? If it's FTP or nothing, then a linux Apache/FTP server using mod userdir would be the easiest.

Perhaps it's the syllabus and/or exam board that needs to get a grip on modern technology rather than the head of ICT?
bossman Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 @kennysarmy: How to setup an FTP server in Windows using IIS Is this any help?

kennysarmy Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 One issue which I have solved was creating a new user - tick I've also used a system rescue CD to repartition - tick and then used CloneZilla to take a system partition backup image - tick The only thing I am stumped with is the firewall does nt seem to want to start... when I type "sudo /etc/init.d/shorewall start" it returns: not done (check /var/log/shorewall-init.log) When I check the log the only part I can find that errors is : Compiling /etc/shorewall/zone... ERROR: No IP Zones defined and then Determining Hosts in Zones... fw (firewall) net (ipv4) WARNING: *** net is an EMPTY ZONE *** loc (ipv4) eth1:0,0,0,0/0 dmz (ipv4) WARNING *** dmz is an EMPTY ZONE *** I don't know enough about linux/ubuntu never mind shorewall to know where to start fixing this : I followed the guide above so I presume there is a difference between the guide and the releases I have used.
kennysarmy Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 SORTED. Recopied over the rules file from the examples folder: DId nt add the "SECTION NEW" line but just: HTTP(ACCEPT) net $FW SSH(ACCEPT) net $FW now the firewall starts
