aerospacemango Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) As a replacement for my LG GT540, I have decided to get a Samsung Galaxy S.... Now....Has anyone upgraded this to 2.3 yet? Was it easy? Do you have a link to this? My LG has been on 2.3 for about 2 months, and although I'll be sad to put it in a drawer, it'll always be my back up! Any advice is greatfully received, and usually rep'ed....unless I forget, in which case you might need to nudge me!!! Edited September 2, 2011 by ZeroHour

Irazmus Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I haven't run the 2.3 update yet, but the update to 2.2 was an absolute a**e. Samsung's Kies software, which seems to be the only supported way of updating, is more than a little buggy, it took 4 separate computers before I found one from which it was willing to run the update (which coincidently was an NC20). Don't let that put you off the phone, it's a nice bit of kit, it's just a shame Samsung's software lets it down. 1

I do like the phone but have found that the battery life is very poor if you do anything other than use it as a phone. ie browsing play games or watching movies whilst travelling. 1

How long are you looking at for battery life? My LG is hardly managing a day at the mo....although I'm pretty sure that has more to do with me messing with the ROM than poor battery!!!

I have been trying for the last 2 hours to get it rooted, and although Root Check says that it IS rooted, busybox says it isn't, whilst Superuser doesn't see Busybox.... Any ideas???? How did you root yours? (If indeed you did!)
pr1vate_piles Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 my other half has a galaxy S, installed the 2.2 update easy enough. Not a big fan of kies but it did the job. Did notice the battery was pretty poor afterwards. Took a few weeks to get it back the way it use to be, seemed to act like it did when we first got the phone so dunno if a script tells the battery to act differently after the update. I'll steal the phone off her this weekend and see how 2.3 goes. 1

Not impressed with battery life, but love the phone
kevbaz Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I havent charged mine for nearly two days now and its on 72% i dont really use wifi on it and gps is off. ive used the camera and apps like twitter/facebook and a couple of games of mouse trap, i use it for email but thats set to manual rather than push and ive sent alot of texts. very happy with it now as previously i had to always have in plugged in as it wouldnt last 8 hours even on standby

jerads49 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Well, you can help extend the life of laptop batteries yourself fairly easily. Just keep your wifi, bluetooth, syncing apps, and gps related apps turned-off when your not using them, because they continously are searching which drains the battery a lot. Also, reduce screen brightness and use the built-in battery usage screen to check the features that are using up most of your battery.
OutLawTorn Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I've got a Galaxy S running 2.3.4 ([GUIDE] Flashing/Installing Gingerbread 2.3.4 to I9000: Detailed guide for n00bs - xda-developers) The main thing i found that killed battery life was Latitude (part of Google Maps)... since i disabled that, its been a lot better... I also tweaked the band selection so my phone only searches on the bands used by my provider... instructions on how to do that can be found http://whrl.pl/RcmrkL (note that the bands selected in the instructions are specific to Optus, Australia... you would need to find out what bands are used in your own circumstances)... With the above tweaks, in a good coverage area i can get a couple of days out of a charge... in low coverage areas its still lucky to get through the day, even with syncing turned off...
Andrew_C Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Juice Defender (recommended here in another thread) helped mine a lot. I am probably getting >1.5 days of mixed but not heavy use. Gmail always on, texts and the odd look into the work email on Firefox. Not many calls as I hate phoning people!
