[wanted] Canon EOS dSLR

Hi all,

 

some of you may have noticed my random ramblings about photography over the past couple of months, well I'm looking to upgrade (already!).

 

I want something from the Canon EOS range (preferably no earlier than the 350D, as the missus has that and I can't be having an 'inferior' camera lol), preferably with at least a kit lens but I can pick one up from eBay if needs be, that's not a problem.

 

Anybody selling one?

 

PS - the reason I specify Canon EOS is that I know a couple of people with them, so lens borrowing and swapping will be an option for me if I have one, it's not that I'm being a snob

Don't rule out older models. The 20D can be had for about 200 notes. It's a fine camera, I've had one for years and have no need to upgrade. It's much better built than a 350D (alloy body on the 20D, rather than plastic). Though the 10D is very cheap, but the startup time is quite slow so you should avoid this. I got my 40D from PC world when the 50D had just come out... managed to get £200 off. Took an hour of bargaining though! Bodies tend to lose value quickly... i'd hope you'd get one on ebay fairly sharpish that would be ok, but i'd be inclined to look for new old-stock style bargains.

Good advice both, I was hoping the 550D might become "cheap" thanks to the release of the 600D, but the price seems to be hanging above the £500 mark (£500 is my absolute, "don't tell the missus" limit)

 

Do you reckon somewhere like PC World would be open to some bargaining then? I've tried a few times bargaining with them but always get the generic "we do not have the authority to lower the price" blurb, even when speaking to the manager...

As a rule of thumb, Canon's build quality for XD is better than XXD which in turn is better than XXXD.

 

Do your homework with very early models, though, very early EOS1 digitals were 4 megapixels, so this may not the bargain of the century.

You might find this Camera Price Buster - UKs cheapest camera gear useful. Definitely try bargaining in highstreet shops. I got mine in PC world Leeds. Advantage there is you can see jessops from their window... "i'm just going to head over there then..." just stick to your guns.

Spent quite a while looking around online for cameras last night, and it seems that it'd be drastically cheaper (even with international shipping) to order from the US... usually I'd jump straight in and do it, but before I do, I wondered if anybody was aware of any reason that might be a bad idea?

You might well find your new camera turns up with a bill from customs and excise for the import duty and VAT.

That is a risk I know, but I've been lucky before... and we're talking about a £100 saving buying from the US, even if I got charged import duty, I'd still probably be saving...

Have you tried the Channel Island shops like 7dayshop?

Hadn't thought of those, unfortunately 7dayshop don't seem to sell SLR's (they sell accessories VERY cheap though! Worth a bookmark!)

 

EDIT:

anybody know any others in the Channel Islands? Googling turns up lots of irrelevant drivel...

I take your point about Canon lenses, but now the Nikon 5100 is out, the 5000 is a bargain - you can get one with a kit 18-55mm VR for around £470. It really is a superb camera for the money... just add a fast prime later on (the 35mm is very good) and the 55-200mm VR or 70-300mm VR can be saved up for if you need them.

I have tried a few, admittedly not any Nikon's though. However, I do really like the feel of the Canon's (all of them I've tried have felt pretty much the same in the hand, albeit the 1D feeling much more robust than the entry level's). The main thing though is that I have family with Canon's, and my missus now has a Canon, so there are plenty of lenses about I can play with...

 

If I saw a real bargain on a Nikon I might consider though, and I'm still not completely put off the idea of a Sony... if nothing else, I could probably pick up a decent used Sony and a couple of lenses for what I'd pay for a Canon with kit lens!
