RM Server Backup failure - blank log

Running RM CC4 on Windows Server 2003, backups have been going along just fine up to now but last log is blank. Event viewer shows no entry for ntbackup, no failures, just didn't run. Have checked policies and all is normal (and nothing has been changed recently anyway) - anyone seen this before?

We're not on a CC4 network so I can't offer any advice there; what I would say is firstly check with RM (assuming you have a support contract with them) and secondly arrange another backup until the main one is working.

 

After that I'd trigger the job manually and watch what is happening, checking disk space, checking for disk errors / tape and drive errors.

Have you tried right clicking the backup task and running manually to see what happens?

Thanks guys, yes it did run manually. I put in a call to RM who advised unscheduling and then rescheduling the backup in RM Server Backup, and it then ran OK last night.

Having the same problem on CC3 did what you recommended un-ticking and ticking to no avail. If i run a manual backup what will happen?

When I ran it manually it just ran the backup as normal.

 

Did you try unticking then clicking Apply and closing RM Server Backup, then opening up again and reticking, clicking Apply again? Saving the setting by clicking Apply was what did the trick methinks.

Yeah unticked > apply > closed > opened> ticked > apply

Doing a manual backup just turns the cursor into an egg timer and nothing seams to happen.

All this is, I believe, is an interface to ntbackup. Does an ntbackup backup (what a mouthful) run as expected?

If you go to run then type ntbackup you should get it up.

Brings up a box saying looking for backup devices..... which has been on the screen for about 10 mins now looks like nothings happening

A quick Google shows:

Same thing happened to me. NTBackup would just hang on start up...after 20 minutes would get dialog "looking for backup device". Solution is to rename( or delete) %SystemRoot%/System32/NtmsData/NtmsData. See:

Backing up to a Quantum LTO2 tape drive, I cant rename that file as it is in use by something?

 

Also looked in computer management > Removable storage an it comes up with there are no items to show in this view? Its like the Tape drive doesnt exist

Try reinstalling drivers?
