text in word all greek to me

I had a student approach me yesterday, who had opened some of her coursework from Year 10 (actually done in June) and had a problem with 2 of 3 files in one folder. The first one was fine, the second looked ok but wherever she'd got text in quotes, it showed up as greek, and the 3rd was all greek.

"what's the problem?" she asked, "dunno, looks all greek to me." was wasted on her.

Selecting the text showed it to be Times new roman, though it obviously wasn't. She was using Office 2000, I had Office 2003 on my machine. Has anyone come across this problem before and found a way to solve it?

Maybe in her version of office she has the language set to greek or some other language and when it is opened on your machine it comes up like that or visa versa your dictionary is set to greek or some foreign language ?

 

Other then that it might have something to do with encoding / format ( ie you know in internet explorer when you can go to view --> encoding and select different formats such as unicode etc )

 

Any chance you can upload the 3 documents zipped up to here so I can have a look myself ( I have office 2003 )

Hi gecko,

the included file is the only one I have on my pen drive, and it seems to have opened with webdings/wingdings on my machine at home.

This can happen if the network connection is interupted during the saving process. Usually you will get, say, the first half of the document and then loafs of squares and other nonsense.

I selected all text - tools > fix broken text ...and eureka!

thanks for that Mark, I can't locate the fix broken text drop down in Office 2003, but I'll keep looking. Surely they can't have gotten rid of it?

look at the section on how to recover word 2000 documents, the thing I did was to go to file --> save as webpage and then save it back That seems to do the trick

Here is what I managed to recover , there are 3 files, basically converted to html and back again.

Fix Broken Text appears to be a little VB script - loads of steps to undo too.
