Interviews to happen this month but start date isn't until beginning of JULY, £12KPA 1yr fixed contract 1st & 2nd line support, respond to customer calls. Working to agreed service levels and resolving a high percentage of calls Installation of computers, printers and systems/services Keeping the ICT web pages up-to-date Essential Skills commitment to equal opportunities; High levels of integrity, honesty and credibility; Commitment to self-development; Self motivated / flexible / customer focus; Ability to deal with customers at all levels; Communication skills; Organisational ability Knowledge and Experience Knowledge, User of Internet Desirable, Networking, Microsoft Office products, education environment, helpdesk support, imaging techniques support and guidance to end users Leadership / Management & Soft Skills Desirable An entrepreneurial style; Commercial awareness.

_Bat_ Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Starting work at the school you have just finished at is an interesting way of doing things... it must be weird actually being on the same level as the staff after being there for five years as a student. Unfortunately my school didn't have a technician (all the work was done by third party companies, the head of ICT, a friend of mine and myself - as computer room prefects). If there had been a technician, I might have been more tempted to ask for a job.

I'm amazed that good IT staff will work for under 12K - commercial will give you at least 5k more. I thought pay was fairly standard across education.
_Bat_ Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 It's for experience I guess. I personally couldn't have asked for a better job, at all. Working as an IT Technician in a school obviously involves so many different aspects of IT - I have learnt so much from both my network manager and several people on this forum. I also love this job, it's at the stage now where I enjoy my working day more then I do my weekend (how sad is that!). Thats not to say I don't enjoy my weekend, I just enjoy my job more. I'm guess i'm one of the lucky ones.
bishopsgarthstockton Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 when i started i had a btec electronics angineering and A+ I know the pay is not great but i accepted it, due to no experience in IT, well only experience i had was from playing around with computers at home. Over the last 3 years i have done the N+, mcp (xp and server 2003) and studying the ccna. the ccna finishes in jan, so thats the time for me to leave the north east and start looking for work in west yorkshire area. i wont be going back to education. would much rather go in to industry
webman Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Yeah, I'm hoping to get some more, but to do that I have to take on a lot more (already done that to get from £8,800k to where I am now) or work full-time as opposed to term-time as I am now. I'm currently half way through CCNA and have NVQ2/3 in System Support. Not much but personally I value the experience I'm getting.
mortstar Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I started in September '05 as term-time IT Tech' on bottom of NJC scale 4 (pro-rata 15k = £13k-ish). This was after dropping out of University, 2 years into a Computer and Business Studies degree. Around July '06 my NM moved on to a different school within the LEA. The Head of ICT championed myself as the replacement NM. The SMT went along with this as a trial period up til December '06. I was very much thrown in at the deep end, still doing my old Tech' job of "fighting fires", but gradually taking over roles and responsibilities as they came along. This was without any prior experience in Organisational Networks, at all! Last month my job evaluation with the council went through and I am now on the top of scale 6 (full time £22.5k). I'm very pleased that the school took that chance on me and I am learning so much everyday. Tomorrow I have a Network Development Plan meeting, where I'm taking my wishlist to the rest of the ICT Leadership group and laying out the plans to get our network up to scratch. Not all stories of pay in school tech positions are so bad - I'm now doing better than the vast majority of my uni' mates who graduated with degrees in Maths, Biochemistry etc.
krisd32 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 When i started in industry i started on 10k after college at a local firm, then got made redundant from said firm, then for some bizarre reason started working as a chef. but whilst all this was going on the primary schools i used to look after contacted me and i started doing 1 day a week for them, after a year of doing this i got contacted by the head teacher of a local high school which in turn got me out of being a chef (thank god) and got me back into IT but only on just over 11k or around that figure (Pro Rata) but now i'm full time at the top of my current pay scale so ican't really complain to say i've only been doing this a year or so! sorry for the life story i just thought i'd add to this! SpecialAgent Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 Co-Incidently it is for a private firm that support/are outsourced from a Local Authority so maybe that why the difference, we will take people with more experience, don't be afraid to apply!!!!!!!!
