Head has just got the first of the mac book pro laptops for the teachers, plugged in the network cable and didnt get an ip address allocated automatically. Should it have done or is there anything special to set up on the mac. Just thinking while typing this it may have been because it was plugged in to the admin network and not curriculum where the server is...doh! Anyway original question still stands, is dhcp auto to windows dhcp server?

DHCP is pretty universal - it should just pick up an address, and find out the default gateway, DNS servers, subnet mask etc. Our Macs just worked when plugged in, and get DHCP leases the same as anything else on the network.

Think about home modem/routers - dhcp servers on there generally linux, and they work with anything... @3s-gtech; is right dhcp is standard, at least for configuring IPs (it can be used for loads more!) you should never find clients which won't get an IP off a particular server, unless you run into a fairly odd bug!
