skunk Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Death of a server in a primary school today, what would you recommend for running the following: ESXi (or HyperV) 4 x Windows 2008 servers 2U by preference as there is not much space in the cab. Thinking a HP ProLiant DL380 G7 with 8 x 500Gb SATA drives 12Gb RAM. Opinions? Anything else to consider?
3s-gtech Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 IMO - SAS over SATA. Otherwise, that's a close spec to ours which runs 5 servers nicely. I'm sure you've looked into SAN solutions for storage too, as an alternative (too expensive for me, but may suit). 1
zag Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I'd got for my normal Dell R310 with a couple of 500gb disks and 16gb ram. Fits 1u cabinet as well. Since they are so cheap you could get a 2nd one for redundancy. 1

DarrenbUNS Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 3s-gtech is spot on. We are installing vmware and servers (HP, IBM, DELL) into schools all the time and SAS is a must. Also make sure you confirm that whatever model you go for is VMWare or Hyper-v supported by the vendor. Oddly some models aren't so be sure to check. G7 is fine though. jamesfed Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 DL385 G7 - AMD Opteron 8 core HE processor - its 2 U just like the DL380 G7 but with a lot more CPU power I'd be looking at a few higher speed 10 or 15k SAS drives for Server OS and more IO intensive applications and then a few of those 500Gb drives for your user data. Add in Server 2008R2 with SP1 (for Dynamic Memory) and you are onto a winner!

Butuz Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I'll 4th the motion to use SAS drives instead of SATA. IF you only have one server and a few drives serving the entire school you need to make sure the drives are as fast and reliable as possible and that means SAS. Butuz
