Despite the fact that we invented the thing (and a lot of other carrier technology we no longer use) the last carrier we had with that facility was HMS Hermes. We sold it to India very soon after it returned from the Falklands in 1982!

The last RN carrier to have a steam catapult was the previous Ark. Hermes had hers removed in the early 70s when she was converted to a commando carrier and only used for helicopters. Hermes was in service with the RN until 1984 and paid off in 85. She was then sold to the Indian navy in 1986 and commisioned as the INS Viraat in 1989.

Never served in the Ark myself, but a have lot of mates who did. Shame she has to go, and very shortsighted if you ask me!
