marsdenprimary Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I know there are a few threads regarding this issue. We've just replaced about 20 PC's...it's a lot to replace and I'm running out of space. My normal response would be to get them recycled. End. But with the recent cuts I can't help thinking that it would make sense to sell them on eBay to generate funds. Do you think it would be ethical to sell them, take a percentage for myself and 'donate' the rest to school? Essentially school 'donate' to me their old equipment, I sell it and donate my personal money for the equipment back into school? Would this work??
Steve21 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Is there any reason the school wouldn't just sell them? Obviously VAT etc comes into it, but if you're going to be taken a "percentage" for yourself anyway. Not really sure why it'd matter either way. Steve

Well that kinda answers the moral question don't you think If the only reason it's not through the school is your gain. Would be different if the school "can't" sell for some reason, but can give away etc etc. And pretty sure you'd run into issues with VAT, as if it was bought with VAT it's supposed to be sold with VAT etc. And you're effectively bypassing this, but still giving the profit to the schools. (VAT free as such) Steve

Well one option, I guess would be sell them as school items aka VAT etc, however try to get overtime out of it Solves both sides. Still arguable on "moral" side. If you "could" do it in normal working day. But either way, Not sure you'll find a perfect answer for what you're "really" looking for School and You gaining. End of day, Does school getting money, or you come to priority? Steve 1

The trouble with giving them away free on ebay is people would just sell them on for a profit and school would gain nothing other than giving their equipment away to a profiteer. At least by recycling it the equipment goes somewhere it will be used...

You've missed the point the delivery charge would be the price you want to achieve for the purchase of the computer plus the delivery charge built in i.e DELL Optiplex 260 free - delivery £40. The price point would be such that it wouldn't be practical for anyone to buy to sell on but for an individual it might be worth it. Just a thought ...

Just a thought ... eBay wont let you do this because its avoiding ebay fees as their is no final value on delivery just get the school to donate them to you and then you sell them on the agreement you will give an agreed percentage back to the school
zag Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Setup an account for the school and sell them through that. Then use the paypal money to purchase things like toner cartridges or cables.

I suppose it's ok with things like wireless access points, monitors etc... but when it comes to PC's there are data protection issues i do believe- which can cause legal issues if not adhered to.

Whacking something up for sale is quick- formatting, finding OS disks, installing new OS...just takes so much time when there are billions of other priorities to be doing. It's a challenge
plexer Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I don't know if the bean counters would like the we'll donate/give them to you and then you pay us something from what you make. This would still be generating income from something the school originally claimed vat back on and therefore they would still have to pay the vat of the money made back to the government? When we've sold stuff whatever it sold for you work out what the vat would be and that tells you what you need to pay back the rest is the schools to keep. Ben
