Steaming laserjet

Someone contacted me today to say that steam was coming out of their HP1320 laserjet after a long print run. I've seen this before on another desktop HP printer. It's slightly alarming. I can only imagine it's moisture being ironed out of the paper, but it's not like they're storing it anywhere damp. Anyone else encountered this?

The small mono laserjet's seem to do it alot even on a single page I'm not sure if it's steam or paper dust or whatever it may be.

We have had this before. The report came through as

 

"The printer in room 1 is on fire!"

I had this yesterday where some paper got stuck in the fuser unit (Brother mono). Turns out it actually did burn the paper which was a nice brown colour when I finally fished it out. Managed to also burn my finger in the process... It's a dangerous job!!

Yes - I had a cheap desktop HP Laserjet a few years ago that did this. I'd always assumed it was simply damp paper - do cheap laser printers maybe heat the paper up more / more suddenly or something?

Which is why the safety information or service manual would state to leave it off for a period of time.

All our classroom printers are either HP1320n's or 2015n's and we have never had this experience, I would put it down to the quality of paper.

The 1320, 2015 and 2055 are not bad little printers although the 2015 were the worst of them all. The 1320's run for ever but never seen any of them steam!!

75 printers here - never seen steam before!!!

 

It must be your paper - it's not normal!!!

I've seen it before on a really old HP LaserJet - like, a LaserJet 6 or something - where the room in question was in the old part of school, with minimal heating, near an old covered sink. Paper got damp, printer steamed, but the paper always came out curled, so if the paper still comes out flat for you then I'm not so sure it would be damp paper.

The 2015s had the bad batch of network/processor boards, and the 2055s seem to be made of cheese. Surprisingly though, they do a lot of work here without too many problems, one 2015 is the main office PC and has done tens of thousands of prints. No steam there!
